Sure, Rotella is a good oil (used it in my 97 Ford PSD until I sold it last year), but for some reason it stinks to high heaven in these Dodge CTDs (at least it does in mine, and you'll probably get a bunch of other folks agreeing with me). Hence you'll see it referred to on this board as Rosmella.
Anyway, it's been recommended to stick with dino oils for at least the first 10 to 20K miles with these engines, so I've been using Valvoline Premium Blue in mine - it's actually recommended or endorsed (or something like that) by Cummins. AND it doesn't stink like the Rotella does. Other folks here will swear by the Chevron Delo 400, and others will swear by others. I'll probably change over to the Valvoline Blue Synthetic at some point in the future.
Just wanted to warn you about the Rotella smell most of all :-)

Hate to sound stupid. This is the fourth diesel I've owned and have always done my own service but this is the first time I heard of dino oil? Is it synthetic or a special kind of oil?

I put rosmella in mine and noticed as soon as I drove mine after that it stinks to high heaven!!!!!! I was told that it is because the crankcase breather hose hangs right on the drivers side and puts out all of that stinky rotalla vapor!! The ford I had never did this because it uses an egr. I will be switching to full amsoil in everything in the next oil change at 14k since I tow non stop with mine my motor is well broken in by now. Also the biggest reason I will be switching to amsoil is because I got talked into becoming a dealer to give me something to do in my spare time.... So far I haven't come up with any spare time... Seems to be an issue with the wife........ ha ha

I used the factory Mopar stuff in the blue gallon jugs(coupon oil & Filter changes from D.C. $54.95)until 15k and switched to Amsoil 15w40 and Fleetguard filters. For info reasons upon the switch the Amsoil "stunk" for several hundered miles! Truck just turned 18k.

AMSOIL 15W40 starting at 7.5k miles and then a 8k journey accross this Great contenent form the West Coast to the East Coast pulling a 6k TT. Oh what a feeling to get 12mpg compared to 6 mpg's with my Dakota
AMSOIL I say, nothing but the best for the beast
