Engine died

I have a 2004 CTD with 65k miles and purchased 12/2003. On the way home from work today, while waiting at a traffic light, the engine idled down and died. On four attempts to restart, the engine would run for up to 3 seconds and on the fifth attempt the engine would not start at all.

Does this sound like a lift pump? I opened the filter drain and I was able to drain about 12 oz., but I could not hear the pump run as it does following a filter change. Is there a fuse or pump relay I could check? Is the transfer pump covered under warranty? What other common components could cause a similar problem?

same symptoms when my lift pump failed except I was cruising 70mph on highway late at night with no moon. if you got the cash, this might be a good time to upgrade to an airdog or someother reputable brand of fuel pump. you should be able to get a code to come out by turning the key on/off/on/off/on and watch the odometer. I think the code is P0628. You will find many many posts dedicated to this topic. If you go with the exact replacement its a real easy fix though. I took a half day from work to do mine and it took 40 minutes to swap out.

good luck

I've read the original style pump is no longer available from Dodge. Does anyone know the Cummins part number for an exact replacement?

Is there anything in the fuel, that I could check, that could cause a pump to expire quickly? I filled up yesterday (26 gallons) from my usual source. Until it died today, there was no indication of any problem in driveability, mileage, smoothness or any other operation.

I have code P0628 and I ordered a factory replacement pump from Geno's. The dealer said the lift pump is covered under the 5yr/100,000 mile warranty and not the Cummins 7yr/100,000 mile warranty. Is this correct? Wasn't the lift pump supplied by Cummins as part of the engine assembly?

Depends on where it is located. Block mounted pumps ( prior to 04.5 MY ) were covered under Cummins, in tank should be Dodge.

Really doesn't matter, because any Warranty pump moves it to the tank, where it becomes a hassle to change.

I installed the replacement pump and problem solved. I was a little concerned at first because it took twice as long to prime the system as it does following a filter change. Thanks for the help.
