As a daily driver it runs anywhere between 15 and almost 17

Egavas - I have a 2006 with just 1550 miles on it, mostly daily driving. With the 4-speed auto, I'm getting 15.8 to 16.5 mpg.
With my 2000 at 7K miles, I pulled a horse trailer with 2 horses from Dallas to Tulsa, dumped the horses, then towed the trailer to OKC. I never slowed down or stopped except for fuel. I averaged over 75 miles an hour and 12 mpg.
My mileage unloaded went from around 17 to over 19 mpg after pulling that load.
I'm not going to wait that long with the 2006. As soon as I can, I'm going to do something similar with my new Dodge. It is undoubtedly the best thing you can do for break in of the Cummins!

I'm sorry just noticed that you have a drop in so it should not affect your mpg as all. For some reason I thought you had the K&N filter set up that replaces the stock air box.

If its a daily driver then yes load that thing up and run it hard and it will help it run better. Not sure if you will see a big improvement in mpg but it sure will not hurt it.

You guys have me a little worried. I dont have anything to tow! I bought this truck because I wanted a big, tough, fullsize 4x4 that got decent milage. So short of stealing a trailer, what else can I do to help break in the engine? Should I load up the bed with a ton of sand bags or what?

Goto Lowes or H Depot and buy something heavy and in bags( so you can take it back easier) like sack crete or the likes ; haul it around for a week or so; and take it back.

FOR WHY DID YOU BUY A DIESEL IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO WORK IT???

He just said why!

Scoggins, if YOU were buying a full size truck and didn't tow/haul, would YOU actually buy a gasser???

I could never have a full size gasser after the CTD(s)!

It is not going to hurt your truck to NOT tow with it. So don't be worried about it. It just might take a little longer to "break-in" than if you did tow with it.

You probably have a buddy somewhere with a travel trailer or something you could pull with it. You can find an excuse or reason somewhere to pull something. Go rent a U-Haul trailer and load it down with something and find you a big long steep hilly area and floor it. OR tow the u-haul trailer loaded down with something heavy for a week.

But if you just don't have any ideas or way to pull a trailer.....DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT. The power to pull will always be there when or if that time ever comes.

egavas, your mpg may improve slightly once broken in.Anything you can do to work the truck harder once its warmed up will speed up this process.Driving fast way over the speed limit(im not saying to do this, but the drag works the engine harder,it also keeps the RPMS up which is good for break in),towing heavy, and carrying big loads all work the engine harder, which will seat the rings faster. If you do not tow,or work it hard, expect it to take 20-40,000 miles to fully break in using conventional 15w40 oil.You know when your working it hard because you will only get 10-12MPG doing it,and thats without excess idling.

On my dad's 06 he worked the snot out of it on a 400 mile trip and he averaged 4.5 mpgs. (Yeah, 4.5)

I don't know how he did it when you guys say even on a CTD that is not broken in you are still getting 9-12 mpg when towing. The one thing i do know is that it worked cause the truck has more power and better mileage already at 3k

Thanks man! Couldnt have said it better myself. I figured I would rather have the power and not need it then to need it and not have it. I might just load it up with sand bags just for good measure

Yes I WOULD Buy a gas burner for a work truck everyday driver IF if the application for it was more fesiable than having an oiler
