Are 3rd gen blocks the same as the older 5.9's ? Just remembering the old 53 blocks and hoping that all got changed. Anyone know?

 

the 53 blocks were a particular casting batch(so to speak) and the issue has long since been resolved. the worst thing you'll have happen to our newer blocks is freeze plugs loosening and popping out under heavy load. but not too common.

 

A 3rd gen block is a totally different animal.

That can happen with old blocks too.
