EGT's on stock truck
Hey guys, Im new to the Cummins. I just traded in my problem child '04 6.0 on the truck in my sig. I have been busy reading all the posts and trying to gain knowledge on my my new truck. There seem to be alot of posts about EGT's getting very high even on stock trucks. I do tow alot and my heaviest trailer is approx. 11k. Do I need to worry about my EGT's getting high enough to do damage? I dont hot rod the truck and drive "normal". Do I need guages? And what about warranty issues with having them installed?
Also, could someone tell me if I can enable the high idle feature w/o cruise?

Welcome to DTR.
most dealers will not give you any grief over gauges. They always seems suspicious with installed gauges, because everyone who bombs the truck, needs gauges. Be convincing and explain you are only wanting to prevent engine damage. Analog gauges are easier to explain, because they only monitor. The electronic gauges packages, ie. outlook, commander, etc. have the ability to control a perf module and the dealers know this, so you will have a harder time getting their blessing.
I put gauges on mine as soon as I bought it, even when all else way stock. But, i had eventually planned to modify it.

So if I drive/tow in a "normal" manner, will EGT's be an issue? I have to save up for a few to get the guages(prob going with the A pillar mount), but I need to tow in the mean time.
How about the high idle feature? Does anybody know if I can get it to work w/o cruise???? TIA

I tow my boat in the summer it weighs only #6100 empty. EGTs can get above 1200 merging on the highway fast. 1100-1200 is "ok" and I just keep an eye on it, above 1250 -1300 short duration. I just use 1200 as my maximum. I am a flat lander but in Missouri And Kentucky on those long grades I use the EGT to back off on the cruise. A few times on a long hill, I backed off from 75 to 70 just to keep it lower.
I drive pretty normal but do have a heavy foot sometimes . I normally drive 70-75 on highway towing and EGT's 800-900 on some hills may get to 1000.
I was in the same as you this Spring. Just took notes on what everyone else was doing.
I use the EGT mostly on shut down. Wait till 350 in city. And summer towing wait till 300 till turn it off. Just using your ears & feel really don't need gauges, but I really like them. My transmission gauge really climbs when backing the boat into the driveway after towing too.
I had a piston rod bearing go out on mine @ 13k miles. They replaced the engine block. They did ask me why I had gauges and I explained why. Another word was never said about it. In my opinion get gauges.

I spoke to the Service Manager at the dealer I use regarding the Pyro guage etc, he said if it is not a stock part - they will not install it and will have warranty issues, no matter how much I tried to explain the guages were for protection of the motor etc, he would not budge.
He has no concept of the diesels, I will be speaking to the owner when next in town.
Same guy who said the acc' delay is not available on my truck.
"EDUCATION OF THE DEALER" - in a town near you.

MTC- My dealer installed my Edge attitude w/juice for $100. No problem voiding warrenty but did tell me if I am on the road and need to bring the truck in to another dealer to pull the box and tell them the moniter is just for that. You need a exhaust brake if you tow and will really like how fast it warms up your truck.
