EGT temps while towing

Have an 03 auto and was wondering what EGT temps I should expect to see while towing? It will easily stay around 1300F when pulling a 30ft stock trailer loaded with cattle. Only aftermarket things on the truck are gauges, KN air intake and an edge box under the hood. Also engine temperature runs around 200 normally which seems a little high to me.

Offroad,

Did you install the boost elbow that came with the Edge box?

I use to see those temps with the Edge EZ box but after installing the boost elbow it dropped by 300 degrees.

I don't believe the boost elbow is installed. The chip was in the truck when I got it and the elbow looks stock. Where did you get your boost elbow from?

when towing my toybox which weighs in close to 9k fully loaded w/water, fuel, and bikes, i see temps to 1200 and sometimes up to 1250. this is going up a grade that is close to 6% or so. recently pulled it empty (7000) up a 7-10% grade that was about 10 miles long and it topped out at a bit over 1250. my temp sensor is tapped into the exhaust manifold right above the main down tube.
just out of curiosity, what is the max tranny temp you've seen?

This is actually on a friends truck and he doesn't have an tranny temp sensor on it, just boost and pyro. I know the pyro is in the exhaust manifold in similar location to yours. About the only recommendation I could give him so far to drop the EGT temp was to go to a full 4 or 5" exhaust and get his foot out of it a little sooner. I was also going to have him look and see what his edge box is set at. What are the pros and cons of the 5" exhaust? 5 almost seems like a little to much to me.

After thinking about it and the times I have driven the truck, I think it already has the edge boost elbow in it because it will easily push 25 PSI, where mt wastegate will open before 20 PSI.

Sounds like he still has the stock elbow if it's 25psi. With the boost elbow should be around 30psi or a little more.

There is no OE pyro, so no way for the ECM to know what the EGT's are. The only temp the ECM will defuel for is coolant.

I thought that a bone stock truck, stock programming, the computer will never give the engine enough fuel to get EGT's to high to need to worry about anything, regardless of how much weight your pulling, or how long of a hill your climing. I read somewere that our Cummins engines can handle, and maintain 1450 degree EGT without having to worry about anything. I don't think, in stock form, the computer will ever give it enough fuel to worry about getting that high?

My truck defuels if it hits 1100 and using cruise control. At least that's what I think it's doing. it will just slow down and stay right at 1100.

So going up hills I have to press the throttle if I want to go higher than 1100.

1450 is for 04.5+ trucks, and yes it is very easy to get there with stock fueling on the 04.5+ trucks.

Couldn't tell ya, maybe its your VA, or something with the CC.. but the ECM has no way to monitor EGT.

I had the VA off the entire trip and it still did it. It's a vicous cycle: The EGT's hit 1100, the truck slows down a little bit, and then the boost drops, which results in EGT hitting 1100 again...That's when I have to press the throttle. Luckily this only happens going up steep hills (CA has some really steep grades!)
