Madhat. Does that cover really suppress sound of the motor, or did you not notice anything? I have heard of some guys taken them off and saying it was louder?

madhat: Thanks for posting the picture. I was also wondering what was under there (I had been told it was a sound dampening device).

I was under the impression that the plastic valve cover on the 2006's WAS/IS the valve cover??? I did not know that there was a metal cover under it. The cover on mine looks very different than that found on a 2005 or earlier model.

svtrick, only dumb question is one not axed. So under there ye have your valve springs ,4 per each hole of course, rocker arms, injector sticks, tubes that attach to them, top of pushrods. Oil hanging around in puddles. The oil filler cap just screws into the valve cover and that's it. Just a place to pour in your Oil of choice. Anyhoo, that is mainly what is under there. Up until these things got so quiet, If it didn't sound like it was about to fly all to pieces, something must be wrong with it. I have an 06, my very first Cummins, it happened to come with a Dodge wrapped around it, however, I have no fault with the wrapping so far. Went to Cummins shop other day and bought the high idle wire and enabled it, now on cold mornings, I can crank it, hit cruise control, and accelerate it up to 1500 rpm to waarm it up sooner and more importantly, prevent wet stacking, very cool. You should do it to yours if you have not already. I think if it is an automatic, you just go to dealer and sweet talk them into doing it either free or pretty cheap I think.

Oh yea, your head bolts or studs if you use them are under there (most of them anyway)

On the 06-07 the plastic that you see IS the actual valve cover. on 03-05 the plastic piece is just a beauty cover (like the Madhats pic)
