Dually to Single Rear Wheel

Have been thinking about changing the dually to a SRW and have read a few posts on other sites however wanted to seek opinions here. If I remove the front wheel spacer and leave the rear axle alone, can I run an 18" aftermarket rim/tire combination as a single wheel set up? I know the dually fenders wound need to be removed or do a total bed swap but is swapping out the rear factory dually axle to a single rear axle necessary?

Thanks!

I came really close to singling mine when I first got it but I'm glad I didn't cuz I ended up with a very heavy 5er. I did a lot of measurements and mine would have had about 3" wider track on the rear cuz the dually axle is wider. Craig
