Dropped Valve?

What is the main reason or cause for a dropped valve? Why does it seem its always number #6 too? This may be an ignorant question, but fill my little mind please. What are some ways to prevent this from happing if any? Thanks

The valves typically don't drop per say, it is the valve seat. The seat is pressed into the head, and when it gets too hot (heavy hot rodding) it can drop down holding the valve open. The valve held open then hits the top of the piston when it comes up to TDC, causing carnage. IT can happen on any cylinder, IF there is more of them happening on the #6 it is because that cylinder does not cool as well as the rest.

Little mind filled.

Here's my story from the recent past. I have a picture of the piston with the valve pieces stuck in the top if you would like to see it, no damage to the wall...

Well I had the shop check the injectors out (not sure what there qualifications are for that), the shop seemed to think they looked good, so I went with there opinion. Its been a few months now and the truck has the power and responsiveness back, I was glad it finally broke cause I had no idea what was going on with some of the early signs....

Yes they replaced the #4 piston complete, and rebuilt the head, around $4000.00.....

Ya, I fully understand what occurs when it happens and and how it happens and that the seat is pressed in the head and etc..., I just never really knew what actually causes it to happen. So the main culprit (spelling) is heat for the most part then? Thanks bud!
