Drivetrain slop
Has anyone noticed drivetrain slop? My truck seems to have alot of drivetrain slop. I have to let off the throttle easy to avoid getting a jolt. I am unsure if it is coming from the tranny or the axle. I have driven other manuals (G.M.) vehicles and they don't seem to have this. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well at least we all have some slop! Misery loves company ya know! Yeah if I ease the throttle on and off it is no big deal. But it still bugs me a little. I would love to know where it is coming from....

I know where the slop is coming from (I think) it looks like we all have 6 speeds. I just finished changing the oil on my 6 speed and while I was cleaning off the magnet and trying to get the last bit of old oil out of the bottom of the gearbox, I found that the two big gears that are visible when you remove the PTO cover (5th and 6th?) could easily be turned about 1/8 to 1/4 turn.......hence the slop......just my 2 cents worth.

Sorry, but I don't buy that . I drive big trucks for a living . Slop and high torque =problems over time . My 02 had zero slop !

Well now that transmission slop theory is very intresting. 1/8 to 1/4 turn huh? That is a bunch of slop in the world of drivetrains! I tend to agree with jwtuc. I don't buy the statement that slop is the nature of the beast in 300 lbs trans. If the trans was using straight cut gears then I might tend to agree....
And like jwtuc said. You mix around 600 ft.lbs, a jerky go pedal foot, and 1/8 to 1/4 slop and you will break something eventually! It shock loads everything in the drivetrain. Not just the gears that are "loose". Me don't like!
Anyone driven a 2005 model? Do they have slop?

Just had an idea. Its a theory and is already being tested because of MikeyB's statement. But is it possible the slop comes from the 4x4 transfer case? There does have to be some play in the gear mesh to allow the 4x4 to engage on the fly. If the gearing was very tight, engagement would be difficult. Just a thought...
