Drive line shudder ??

Looking for an answer. Twice in the last month I have had a minor shudder in the driveline while towing. Both times it was under load towing about 6k. I am running the Jr on #2, truck has the 48re and 47K in miles. I have checked all the u joints and they seem fine. I am thinking it might be the TC ???

Any ideas???

Could be TC. If yo have a long wheel base it might be center carrier bearing.

I have a 2006 long box quad cab and had a nasty shudder on hard acceleration from a stop or any speed while accelerating towing a trailer. My steady bearing rubber was so loose I could move the shaft up and down at least an inch inside the rubber. I replaced the two piece shaft with a one piece shaft and the problem is completely gone.

I've found the only way to know a ujoint is bad on these trucks is to remove it. shaking it and trying to rotate for play don't do the trick from what I've seen. But when hauling, you will usually feel a bad ujoint shudder when taking off from a stop. In many cases actually

Was the shudder from a dead stop?

Right you are, everyone seems to forget a U-joint seizes up before it grinds itself to pieces, you have to pull the shaft to find one that just started going bad.

The steady bearing is mounted midway between the rear axle and transfer case (4wd) or transmission (2wd). It's a horseshoe shaped unit that the driveshaft goes through and you'll see a black rubber bushing inside the metal housing. You'll get some up and down movement out of it but if it's worn out you can get better than 1" of play up and down.
No....the dealership can't check for that on the computer.

We call the "steady bearing" a carrier bearing down here in Oklahoma. Mine had the bad rubber bushing last year and I paid the dealer in Tulsa close to $200 for a replacement. No aftermarket part seemed to be available at any parts store. I took the entire drive shaft to a drive line shop and when I told the guy how much I spent on the new carrier bearing he laughed. He measured the yokes diameter and the drop and found a spicer that matched exactly for about $48. They can get them, they just can't look them up by make and model. They have to be pressed on anyway so if that's your problem, I'd go to a driveline shop first!

Thats all I ever heard one called was a 'carrier bearing" or sometimes a mid shaft bearing and I was in the repair end 30 odd years.
