I've got a 05 2500 ctd and it appears that it is burning about 1 liter in about 5000 miles. it only has 30,000 miles on it and I am just wondering if this is normal or if i should be looking for other problems. It seems to run fine and I haven't had any problems with it.

Absolutely not normal. It shouldn't lose a drop!

I have 200+K on mine and besides the time my vacuum pump seals went and when I failed to tighten the turbo drain hose well enough it has never leaked a drop!

If you are really losing a liter every 5K and you are still under warranty you had better get it in immediately.

I've got over 100,000 miles on mine. I change the oil at every 10,000 miles and it has never needed a quart between changes. This engine consumes less oil than any I've had.

I have 19.7k miles on mine, never had to add any oil between changes. I change oil every 5k miles.

I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong but that is the case with the older (much older) diesels. I think that has something to do with the "Oil Burner" name given to diesels.

I think "oil burner" refers to the diesel fuel, which is light oil.

i dont know if mine is burning motor oil, but it sure is blowing some out of the breather tube coming from the side of the block. my truck only has 11,500 miles on it and im not sure if thats normal or not. i have noticed more engine noise than before like a very slight knocking or tapping but it still runs fine and my mpg is still in the 18's on the hwy as its always been.

Same here. First vehicle I have ever owned that didnt seem to use any oil.

Of all the problems with my 04.5 at 70000 miles one it never had was it never burned any oil or needed any oil between it's 15000 mile oil change schedule. Think you have a problem and need to have dealer check it for a cracked ring or something else broken or failing.

my old 93 never moves off of the full mark between changes,at 5000,to 8000 miles.

Over 40k on my truck and no oil burned yet. There is definetly something wrong with your truck.

Although it's not common, I think you'll find that it's well within the range that Cummins allows for oil consumption. I believe there may have been a bulletin issued regarding allowable oil consumption. By all means, have it checked out and documented, but they may disappoint you.

Not sure what youre using for Oil, but I would try something that ends in 40 or perhaps 50. if you are still using alot of oil after the next oil change, you will have to dig a bit deeper.

I think oil burner was given to them because Rudolph Diesel developed them to run on peanut "oil."

Also, I never have had to add any engine oil to any of the diesels I have had.
