Dodge auto tranny any good?

Hey Guys,

I've been doing a whole lot of research on diesels as I am now shopping for my first truck. I was initially going towards a GM vehicle but found they had too many overheating/injector/other problems. One thing I noticed on the GM forum was that they where always bashing the Dodge auto tranny. Is there something wrong with it or are they just hating?

Nothing wrong with mine although I only have 16k on it. The torque convertors are pretty loose though.

I would get an aftermarket torque converter and valve body, but the new stock auto trans. are actually a pretty good transmission from what I have seen and heard. I had no problems with mine in my 03' at all.

More importantly....isn't it nice to know that is all they can find to complain about?

Other than being a 4-speed and could really use another gear, the Dodge auto tranny is a fine tranny. It will serve you well throwing everything at it that the stock Cummins can muster. While there is always a better torque converter and valve body if it makes you feel better, it is not necessary for a reliable tow vehicle unless you plan to upgrade your engine and put some serious power to the ground.

They all seem to bash the Dodge trans but when you start making Monster power, no matter which brand you drive, your trans will need some upgrades. The stock trans will hold up fine to stock power....
I agree with AKRAM, it's funny that it's the only thing they bash the Dodges about. They call our engines "Cumaparts" but they can't really show any proof of the engines being unreliable because there is none...
I'll take my "Crap" trans w/ my Cummins over a 6.0L Powerjoke anyday.....

I did a lot of research before I bought my truck, and I believe the 48re is a decent tranny. Certainly as good as the Ford tranny. Even the mighty Allison has it's problems. The selling point for me was the Cummins.

Thumbs up

I would have to second what AK Ram said. The 48re is a reliable unit , it just doesnt have the most efficiant converter. Change that out with the valve body and live happily ever after. Modified they are pretty good. Not as good as the allsion but the rest of the truck makes up for that. Esp the powerplant!!

Yeah they can bash our transmission. But, put their transmissions behind the cummins and see what they say.
