When it comes to changing the fluid, is there an actual gasket for the covers or are you using rtv?

What is the capacity if you do the front and rear? I am planning on doing this to my 2003 and needing to know how much to buy.

Gasket is re-useable many times.
Front holds 4.75 pints
Rear holds 7.65 pints

I went today to get the 75w90 synthetic gear oil. Hardly anyone in town had any or they would have 1 quart. According to the local parts store, Advance, autozone and oreillys, no one uses the stuff so they dont stock it.

What I didnt want to happen did happen. I didnt want to have to order it. I wanted something that was in stock incase of an emergency. Anyways I ended up buying the valvoline synthetic at autozone for $8.99 a quart and they have 5 stores each sending two quarts to my local store.
They also wanted $53 for the front cover gasket.

real426maxwedge if you have on '03 or later you do not need a gasket or gasket sealer. The gasket on the diff is a rubber coated steel gasket and is reusable over and over. Just don't over tighten the bolts as they will break if tightened to the torque in the manual. I use a small wrench and just snug them down. Not had any leaks in 105k miles and I change the front every 30k and the rear every 15k because I tow heavy.

I am changing it in my 2003

I wish it was like the dana 60 in my 69 road runner, it has a drain in it from the factory. The 1966-early 1968 dana 60's in B body mopars have a drain in them.

Thanks
scott

Finally got around to changing my rear diff fluid today. The fluid used was the regular Amsoil Synthetic 75W-90 and it has been in the diff for five years and has over 100,000 miles on it. I was wrong earlier in this post on what my mileage was after I thought about it. It was spring 06 when I changed the fluid last. I will get to the front one of these days. I'm not worried about the front since I have the Dynatrac kit installed and has about 50,000 less miles on the fluid. Amsoil Synthetic 75W-90 went back in.

No, and you can run the engine on sewing machine oil, too.

Just buy the stuff from the dealer and be though with it. Or buy a vehicle you can actually afford to maintain.
Lets hope you need help some time, i will be the first to answer your problem.

Yeah, it was kinda abrasive. But to be fair to the guy, he did apologize for the comment in post #28.

They switched to synthetic gear oil to help fuel mileage. I'd guess you could use dino oil, but it won't last as long or be as slippery.

The dino and syn oils can both meet the same spec, because they have the same or similar additive packages. The synthetic base oil is slicker to start with, so things wear a little less and it lasts a little longer than the dino oil.

I wonder if the oil in my D70 has ever been changed, or if it has 1/4 million miles on it.
