DIY 48RE rebuild

My 03 has had a converter shutter for a few thousand miles and now it is slipping in first. Im going to try a fluid/ filter change and band adjustment to make it live a little longer but I know its on its way out. I remeber reading about some people rebuilding/ upgrading their own trannys. Whos done it and where did you get your parts? Im thinking of going with a good converter/ valve body and mabey buy a rebuild kit for it with upgraded parts/ extra clutches etc. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks Chris

These are just a few, there are several more. Maybe Tim Holt will chime in.....He can give you some advice...or just pm him..

You should also be able to ask questions from who your buying your kit or parts from..lots of people say Goerend is the best at customer service(gbtransmissions) Good luck in your project Rooster

I am also interested in rebuilding my 48RE myself. I have rebuilt numerous transmissions in heavy construction equipment but never a truck or car transmission. I want to upgrade for future power upgrades.

Is adjusting the bands necessary if not attempting to address a specific problem? I've always been told to leave it alone unless it is known the adjustment is way off.

There are no bands applied in first gear. The bands are for second and reverse. If its slipping in first, time to rebuild it. And better to do it while the problem is small, the more you tear it up, the more it costs.

Does this kit sound like a good deal? "K48RZ2. Turn your 48RE Diesel transmission or 48RE Viper motor transmission into our level 4 Ramzilla transmission. This Combo Kit is for late 2003 up 48RE transmissions only. You get the Alto Red Eagle master rebuild kit, rigid Carbon intermediate band, Fairbanks TransAction kit, performance 3-4 accumulator spring, heavy duty Sonnax low / reverse servo, Sonnax heavy duty / no leak intermediate servo cover, full time torque converter fluid feed valve, heavy duty intermediate band apply strut, 300M input shaft, 23 overdrive single sided clutches, all extra clutches needed for the buildup - 2 forward clutches and 2 steels, 1 overdrive brake clutch and steel with thin backing plate, deep cast aluminum pan, forward ring gear and one thin forward backing plate. The torque converter will be a full size triple clutch billet converter for gas or diesel and can be ordered with a 10 inch billet torque converter for the Viper motor if a higher stall speed is desired. The 10 inch converter must be used with a special flywheel and adapter. There is no discount on the adapter. Save 9.8% here. Kit with full size torque converter $2548.00." Its from transmission center.net. I have the factory service manuel and my dad has a nice big shop (tractor repair place). I have never done a transmision but my dad says hes done some older ones and lots of tractors with autos. This may be the way I go. chris
