I'm on my second CTD.

The first was a '99 2500 with auto tranny. With the first CTD I never had an odor of diesel fuel when I shut down the engine.

The "new" 2005 seems to have a slight diesel "residue" type odor when I shut down the truck, and it lingers for over an hour. Is this normal, or do I have a leak??? No puddles under the engine, no odor when we're running.... just this lingering trace of an odor....... it's driving me nuts.

What do the big kids have to say???

Yep, no problem in that sector.

Plus I've got a No. 1, old tyme, Chrysler diesel tech that watches over my vehicles and he says this one is a gem. He's done a couple oil changes on her with no indication of diesel in the oil.

 

I have on occasion had the same thing happen on my 05. In fact I smelled it just today. It just comes and goes. No leaks and oil level just fine. I have no clue where it can be coming from but it has done that for as long as I have owned it.

 

Exactly my situation... I just love an intermittant problem.... don't you? Any of the rest of you 2005 owners plagued with this characteristic??

Cant find a leak no where.
But shut it off and walk by it and smell raw fuel?

 

Check your CP3 and rail fittings. My 05' had the same problem about a year ago. No drips but had an odor, which I don't really mind unless it's coming from my ear, but that's a whole nuther story...
A couple of fittings on my rail going to the injectors were seeping fuel slightly. Snugged em' up, some were a little more than hand tight. No more problems. Don't go crazy with the tightening either... just snug em' up. Also, some 05' Cp3's had a leaking problem. Mine didn't but that's where I started to look initially. Had diesel dripping down onto the computer from the rail.

 

Yes, check the CP3. With the truck off, run your hand under it to see if its leaking.

My truck always has a slight diesel smell and I've never found any leaks, my CP3 is dry. I will check the rail and fittings though, I never considered that. I had thought the smell was from a slight leak on my Glacier kit but I have checked it out and can't find anything. My oil level is fine too.

 

CP3???? Rail I understand.... CP3 I guess might be the pump?

 

CP3 is the high presure pump, mounted on the timing cover. Right where the VP44 would have been on your 99. There have been several - mine included - that leak i nthe middle of the pump housing where the plates are put together. There is a thread here with part numbers and everything for replacing the seals with Viton ones. I'll see if I can find it.

 

I'll bet it's the CP3 weeping a little fuel. The smell of fresh diesel smell under the hood is a tell-tale sign. Get underneath and look straight up behind the steering box. I'll bet you can wipe diesel fuel off it.

Like VZdude said, they leak/weep where the two different metal surfaces come together. I have had it happen on two trucks each of the last 3 winters.

Search CP3 leak for more info. I think member Rich2500 put together all the information to fix the leak issues with new seals/o-rings.

All the pics are gone now though bu the part numbers are still there.

 

My 03 has had this exact problem with the smell of raw fuel. It started 9k miles ago when I got new injectors. Everything seems fine but have not checked the CP3!

 

I'll check it tonight!!!

That smell is either the perfume or cologne of your truck(depending on whether you consider your truck a male or female).
