dies until warm
When temps are below 35f or when the temperature falls say 20 degrees in a day from 60 to 40 even, my truck will die several times until warm. It dies while sitting idling and when driving. It has done so every since I bought it new in 2006. No dealer has been able to fix it. I just dealt with it for the last couple years but with the cold weather we have been having in Texas it is getting under my skin again. I have changed the fuel filter -no change. I have ran different fuel cleaners/dryers - no change.
Does anyone know what this could be?
2006 5.9 cummins
It throws a P2509 code

Same truck, same issue
Does it die totally out or just die down some. I has the same issue and was worried also. But then I talked with a guy I trust with these engines and he is what he told me. The preheater does not just cycle prior to starting, it will also cycle after the engine is started to preheat the intake air. It will only do this for so long and under a certain speed, cant remember if it was speed based or engine RPM based. But he told me not to worry about it. The Preheater drawns ALOT of current when is cycles and the drawn on the alternator is transposed into the idle speed. Hope this helps.

dies when cold
If idling it dies out, if driving up to about 30mph it dies out completely and you have to get it stopped without going into a ditch (no ps or pb), if driving faster it dies but restarts on its on (cuts out).

do you have any gauges sounds like a fuel pressure issue to me maybe your lift pump is going bad, or gelled fuel? fill out your signature so we know what you have done to your truck it is on the top left of the page in the user cp part

I will fill it out.
This truck first did this at 1500 miles when completely stock (now has 75k). I have made no changes to the fuel system. I have put in a programmer and it still does it. I put in a K&N filter in the stock box.

Not like mine...
Whoa, yeah that is way worse then mine. Definatley sounds like a fuel issue, remember nice thing about these engines is you only need three things to run, Fuel, Air, and Compression. As long as your filter is good and clean, and you know you are not loosing and getting back compression, only thing left is fuel. Hope that helps.

Take your cap off your fuel filter canister and cycle the key. If LP is working you should have fuel being pumped in....not sure about volume/time but someone will probably chime in on that part of it. It should fill up rather quickly, if not then I'd say a weak LP could be the problem but it definitely sounds like a fuel problem of some sort.....possibly even a sensor thats acting up.
I had my truck to the dealer 6 times on record with the same problem every time and every time I got the same crappy answer "We can't seem to duplicate the problem.....nothing wrong with it!" They even listened to it run over the phone and agreed it had a problem but since they could never duplicate the problem would never fix it. Long story short: FCA was bad, in turn sending false readings to the ECM. Try a different dealership and see if they can come up with an answer for you. I feel your pain. Good luck.
