Detune a 2007 5.9

Anybody ever thought about a way to detune a 2007 5.9 (or other years for that matter) back to the hp and torque levels of a 2003-2004 which seem to get way better mileage.

There is a thrird injection event that was incorporated to quiet the engine down. This is probably the main reason the newer trucks get worse mileage. Cheer up! You could be driving an 07 or 08 6.7 and getting even worse mileage....

Not including all the EGR and turbo cleans you will need for as long as you own the truck. Keeps me very busy, thank goodness for modern technology.

The cam is also part of the Cummins in cylinder EGR system. You will loose fuel mileage with it also. No tuning around that.

do the 6.7's have the crappy in cylinder EGR cam profile or did they go to a decent cam profile?

i wish the aftermarket would offer a program to detune to say 235 hp and 500 ft lbs or near the old 12v or 24 valve?...but with the advanced timing for good mileage. I would be interested in this solely for my motor living longer and getting good fuel economy

I know smarty has a "half power" tune, but its just a little on the weak side

Question

I think there`s a LOT more to it , than just "de-tuning" it.

Also , as long as you`re not running it to it`s limits , you`re not using ALL of the power anyway.

I would think an engine working less , with more HP, would be more economical than a lesser HP engine working as hard as it can to keep up....kind of like a ZR2 Vette with 500+hp getting 25+mpg , and a 250hp similar type veh. getting the same...

i want a motor with tuning for economy(you cant get tha from the factory anymore thanks to the epa) with lower horsepower so the motor and the rest of the drivetrain will last longer under heavy use(towing/hauling).

I know back out of it you say....sometimes it seems like the common rail gives full fuel at say 75% pedal..??

Max HP is at 2900 rpms and max TQ is at 2500 rpm's. Your right foot is your power control. Use sparingly and you won't generate any more power than is needed to do the job. Thats the beauty of a load based engine.

You can tow anything up to the rated GCVW and not use anymore than 150-180 hp at any given time, if you use the TQ and the gears correctly.

All things being equal, your CR should should economy within 10% of any of the older trucks, both loaded and empty. The difference is the newer trucks are heavier bulkier than their ancestors. It takes x HP to move it and the only way to improve that is put the truck on a diet. More HP will actually give better economy in the long run so enjoy the surplus.

My kids and I have 5 of thes trucks, 92, 95, 99, 03, 05. Loaded with the same weigth under the same conditions they are all within 1-2 mpg of each other. Empty about the same if your throw out the extremes. All I see is more power and more comfort for a neglible cost. I'll live with it.
