Dead Fuel Delivery Pump...2003

My wife was driving the truck last night and it died as she was pulling off the highway....she called me in a panic....

I had it towed to the local dealer and they called just now and said it's the fuel delivery system (pump ).

Anyway it's covered under the powertrain warranty ($100 deductible) -

They CS rep went on to tell me it's a good idea to change the fuel filter as well since some "debris" might have gotten in there???

They wanted $79 bucks.....I told him I have an extra at home and will do it myself.

My question is....is the fuel filter change required after the above fix???

Thanks in advance.

Rob.

I would say yes. If the pump really crapped out bad it may have came apart and passed debris to the fuel filter. I would change it and look for any debris and use the 7 Micron filter.

Its not part of powertrain with a $100 deduct. Its part of the engine/Cummins fuel system warranty with a 0 deduct if under 5 years.I think(pretty sure) lots of folks getting hit with that $100 deduct on the Cummins/fuel system warranty when its POWERTRAIN that has the $100 deduct and NOT engine/fuel system that has NO deductable.

I'd change the filter and promptly return to the mis-informed (or crooked) dealer and get your 100.00 back.

Guys,

Is the zero deduct posted anywhere on the web??

I only found this:

The Cummins® Turbo Diesel engine is protected by a separate Limited Warranty, covering the engine for 5 years or 160,000 kilometres.*

Cheers

Hounddog - 100% correct.....heres the link to prove it!

http://www.everytime.cummins.com/eve...m_warranty.jsp

You just saved me $100 since I havent picked up the truck yet. The dealer called late yesterday and said the Tech noticed a couple injectors didn't sound right and they will be replacing them as well!

Still fals under the ZERO deduct!

Cheers!!

UPDATE:

I called the dealer and CSR said the $100 dollar still applies as it's coming up on their computer???

I told him I will be bringing in the printed info from the Cummins site which is the exact opposite of what he's saying.

This will have to be escalated to the Service Manager I'm sure.....I also wonder how they will handle the towing charge??

I'll update all once this is resolved.

There are quite a few different coverages. To approve the work they put your VIN in and get the info from chrysler. That link from the cummins site.....the only sentence worth a squat is the last one, "See your Dodge dealer for complete warranty details"......and besides, lift/transfer pump isn't even listed.

....that said, what they need to do to get the op code that will be covered under the engine warranty is to use the part number for the original canister mounted lift pump. IF they use the part number for the lift pump conversion (in tank) pump it won't come up as covered, but will fall under the "contract" side with the $100 deduct. Been there....done that.

.....and if nothing else. You couldn't have done it yourself out of pocket for $100.

This part I believe applies to me from the Cummins site:

* Fuel injection pump and injectors

I haven't received a call from the dealer so I guess it will be Monday.

But I'll call Chrysler Monday morning to confirm - I would think they BOTH should be on the same page.

I also noticed in your profile you have a 2001....not sure if the Warranty has changed since then.

It's not the $100 BUCKS.....it's the principal.

Cheers

i went to the dealer today toget a new lift pump for my 03 and he told me that they don't sell the old style pumps any more. they now sell you a kit that puts the pump in the gas tank. i asked them why and they told me some bs line but i made upmy minde to go with a glacier aftermarket lift pump kit. this guy also told me that there is no point to having a fuel pressure gauge so i am afarid of anything he says.

They delated the pump on the filter housing 100%. You can still get one through a Cummins store but not D.C.
