DC and the CP3

Not parts that are restricted. Only star hotline has authority to send those out, it depends wether you get one of the nice guys on the phone or one of the other kind. There are some real good guys at star, and about three or so that I'd like to punch in the face.

Can you tell us what determines a "restricted" part from Star?
Thanks!

I have had 4 pumps replaced for leaks & this new one that was replaced in the fall is wet underneath as well. It seams something in the wimter blended fuel that causes it. No ill effects on the running of the motor though. It also seams that adding Power Service makes it WORSE???
The only ones that aren't leaking are the one's that haven't been checked YET!!

Rich2500 - I'm definitely interested in your write-up and pics.

yes dj that is my theory of what is happening,I have done tests with the o-rings that I removed from my pump and winterblend fuel and I could not find any firm evidence that the leaks are fuel related

Well, mainly it is big ticket items, like pumps, injectors, turbos, long blocks, stuff like that. When ever we go on the computer to look up a part, if it is restricted it will not let you order it, and there is a message saying that it is a restricted part and you must call star hotline for ordering assistance.

RICH2500, They keep all the pumps. I don't have any of them. I am just going to deal with it. They told me that Star informned them that weapage is O.K.
So they know all about the problem. What I find interesting is that Chevy uses the same pump, there set up is different from ours in that it a drip cannot be seen. So you know those pumps also leak but cannot be detected. Sniff the next Duramax under the hood and you can smell diesel.

So apparently these replacement pumps have the same seals / problems as the initial factory leaking pump. That’s like buying bald tires or rebuilding a motor with used parts. Obviously there is a cause to the problem. Have any of you guys heard of a real fix from Dodge? Something like a updated CP3 without faulty seals or whatever is causing the issue. Sounds if you want it done right you have to do it yourself. Looking forward to what Mr. Rich2500 has done.

The other thing I forgot to mention was that the style of the pumps has changed over the years also, so it's not like I got the same CP3 as I had on the truck when it was new. And they still leak. Fuel additive seams to make the problem worse!
Cold weather + winter blended diesel fuel = wet pump.
And this fuel in NOT, I repeat not, ULSD.

Does anyone have in writing DC's response regarding 'weeping' or 'seepage' is OK, and will not be replaced? I'm really wondering about (if I could get their response in writing) sending a letter to DC and asking them to repond in writing that:
a) they're stating that a FUEL LEAK under the hood of their trucks is considered acceptable
b) they realize that if fuel can come out, then arguably dirt can get in, via a leak that they consider acceptable
c) they acknowlege that parts below the CP3 are soaked in diesel (wiring harnesses, etc.), and that is acceptable as well
I wonder how far I'd get with that letter?

YEP. Have had two replaced. The last replacement 13 months ago was the CP3s which has the relocated weephole. It was also a remanufactured unit. Yes the redesigned ones also fail. Tis the season. This one is also leaking. It started this past Fall when we had a few cold nights. I made an appointment but in the mean time the weather got nice here in Ohio. Needless to say it went from an overnight drip on the driveway to just the same old seeping on the crank position sensor. I cancelled the appointment due to the old been there done that on the not leaking enough to replace thing. Told the dealer I would reschedule when it gets cold again and starts to leak enough to hit the ground. It's here again! Old man winter has returned with a vengeance and so has the good old leaking CP3. A quarter size drip on the driveway every night. I'm sorta with sawboy on this one. I am sick and tired of having the pump replaced every Winter. It get's to be a major inconvenience not to mention missing work and renting a car. It has normally taken the dealer one day to replace the pump and one day to repair the items damaged while replacing the pump. So far one fan shroud and then one radiator broken when replacing the shroud. More appointments and more missed time from work. The good news is the dealer gave me a rental while they repaired the damage. I still have plenty of warranty left. Next year after five years it will cost a $100 deductable. For now I am just going to kick back and monitor my leaking pump along with "The Dreaded Seasonal Leaking CP3 Wars".
TUNDRA TUNDRA TUNDRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just a thought. But if they build an eight lug heavy duty diesel?
