I very definately do not want to be speculating on something that I have not seen but I would think that there is a difference between dirt and discoloration. If it discolors on the outside the inside will also. MOre than that, without seeing it, I don't need to be telling you what I don't know.

Doesnt the filter filter from the outside in, meaning that the inside surface of the filter is actually the surface that is stopping the gunk? I kind of looked around in the filter bowl when I changed it and assumed the fuel came into the bowl from the post on bottom center of the bowl and filled from the top? I may be way off too!

I changed mine once a year when I was running the stock filters.
I change them about every 75000 or 80000 miles now with the FASS.
