Crossin over to the Dark Side
I have a 96 2500 4x4 and Im thinkin about crossin over to a 24 valve 2003. Can anyone tell me the pro's and con's? I've never read the 3rd gen forum, I have just been in the 2nd Gen. Much difference between the two truck? Does the 2003 have the IP issues that the 2nd gen 24 valves do? Thanks

The common rail motors are generally quieter and make more power in stock form. The CP3 injection pump is apparently more reliable than the VP44 on the 2nd gens, but they can fail. They are just not as sensitive to fuel pressure from the lift pump as the VP44.
The frame is supposed to be stronger on the 3rd gens and with a higher GVW rating. Since they have an ECM (electronic computer) you can just add a "box" or "programmer" to make more power with ease.
You might want to hang on to that 12 valve though. Those might be a collectible some day!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here but 2003 Gen 3 HP and torque is dependent on if its a SO-standard output 250HP or a HO- high output motor....305HP right...?
Also- If you do not find a 6-spd, (I could not in my area) and have to settle for an auto, make sure its a 2003.5 that came with the 48RE tranny....
