Crankcase Breather Filter Cleaning??
Hey all,
Anyone know if their is a crankcase breather tube filter on the 2004.5 trucks?
I took a good look at mine and it looks sealed with no media at all in the plastic housing. Is this even something to keep up with and clean? I think I've read something on this site about it but I can't find it on the search.
thanks in advance,
Jamie

At least on the 03 it looks like there are 4 bolts that hold the breather cover to the rockerbox, and two bolts that hold the breather assembly down, and the breather tube and oil drainback tube are hooked to it.
The breather assembly does appear to be sealed and intended to seperate oil from vapor.
I remember some discussion about trucks that drip from the breather tube, and if cleaning out the breather assembly would help, but since mine never drips I haven't felt the need to mess with it...
I guess if the truck doesn't drip and it doesn't look gummed up, I wouldn't worry about it. If my truck did drip, though, and the thing were full of oil or gunk I would think about dunking it in some cleaner (cleaner that wouldn't eat it).
There does not appear to be any mention of it requiring any scheduled cleaning or service.

Yes I was thinking the same thing only mine does have a slight drip. When I was looking at mine I noticed that it is very difficult to pull the hoses off the plastic breather box. Any ideas on how to pull them off without breaking anything.
Also what kind of cleaner? I have purple power...
thanks Jamie

Like I said, I haven't actually taken mine apart, so I was hoping someone who has would post...
Since no one has yet... All the book says under removal of crankcase breather is "disconnect breather tube and lube oil drain tube from the breather", so I would preusme they just pull off.
Once you get it off, I guess look it over well and make sure there is no media or anything in it that is likely to be delicate. If living in oil doesn't hurt it I would guess (just a guess) that something like kerosene or diesel wouldn't hurt it?
Whatever you use, I'd be sure to blow it out and make sure it is dry before putting it back on.
I think you are in new territory here. If you decide to pull it off, let us know how it goes, and if it helps the breather tube drip...

Interesting... I wonder if that could explain why some people seem to have an occasional drip from the breather tube and some people don't, or even if that has something to do with why some people have an odor in the cab and some don't...
