CP3 Replaced - Good Report

Well, after having the seeping CP3 problem last winter, it was worse this winter so at 85,000 miles I took it in to Tom Addis Dodge here in north Idaho. I was a little nervous after reading all the stories on this forum, but I just told the service writer I wanted them to check and see if it would be replaced under warranty. He said it is a covered part but tried to tell me a $100 deductible applied. So I kindly showed him in the warranty manual (page 12 I think) where it says, "A $100 deductible per service visit applies AFTER the vehicle has been in use for 5 years." He didn't argue the point after that. I asked if I would need to make another appointment if it was covered to have it replaced, and he said he thought they had a lift pump in stock. I said it's not the lift pump that's leaking, it's the injection pump. Well, he thought they had one of those also. This was at 9:00 a.m. About 4:00 I got a call that the truck was done and it was all covered under warranty at no charge to me. When I went to the cashier to pick up the receipts, she goes, "That'll be $1153.00." I said uh, warranty, at least that's what I was told on the phone. So she called to the back and had it cleared.

Anyway, sorry for the novel, but I just wanted to post a relatively smooth dealer experience. You still have to watch them, but at least so far with this one it seemed to help to show them I was knowledgeable and was not going to be pushed around by them.

BTW, the part number showed it was a rebuilt one, so hopefully it has better seals in it.

I would say that is a POOR dealer experience. Someone who doesn't read this forums would have been RIPPED off. It is the dealer's responibility to know how the warranty works.

I see your point, but I guess I was just glad I didn't get the runaround about it not leaking "enough". And they didn't have to order the part. And they replaced it in less than a day.

I just got my CP3 replaced today as well. I took the truck to the local dealership last Wednesday and told them the CP3 pump was leaking. They pulled it in and looked at it and confirmed the CP3 was leaking, but referred to it as a "high pressure pump". They didn't have another in stock. Called me yesterday saying the pump was in. Took them a couple of hours to replace it. When I went to checkout, the service manager told me there was a $100 deductible. I politely pointed in the warranty manual to the Cummins engine section where it states ""A $100 deductible per service visit applies AFTER the vehicle has been in use for 5 years." He read it himself then replied "I am glad you caught that, I didn't". Anyway, he reprinted the workorder and I got out of there for free. They should know the warranty information better than what they do. Mine too was a rebuilt one, hopefully better seals than the original.

The service writers can't possibly know everything. For some of them a diesel truck is as odd as a spaceship! Well informed customers have led me in the right direction before and heck......I am a certified tech! Glad to hear that both of you had good service. Not every dealer can stock every part, and everyone makes mistakes. Now.......if they try to charge you the $100 next time........gotta go!

Remember, those of us with 2004s ALSO have a 7/70 Powertrain Warranty. So even if you are PAST 5 years, your 7/70 would still cover it.

Again, the dealers KNOW this, they are just hoping you don't. Call my cynical.....

That being said, my dealer, while generally CLUELESS about warranty issues (flat out refused to do an RRT Recall for coolant on my SRT8, said it "didn't apply - I had to go out of state to my selling dealer, who did it, and didn't understand why my dealer wouldn't). But I digress....

Generally, my dealer has been good about covering warranty issues in my cars and trucks in the past. We'll see next week if the try to hit me with the $100.....
