CP3 Gear Removal

My truck has this ticking sound that occurs between 1600/2000 rpm. at highway speeds. After reading all the different threads on different forumscome to the conclusion the CP3 injector pump is out of sync with the engine stroke. I need to re-time the injector pump. Proceeded to remove front cover, took off the nut and washer. Tried to extract the gear with the steering wheel puller. Thats as far as I could go , because I just can't do it with that puller. It's been kicking my a// Any one had experience doing this ??? Any tips???

All the ones I read about making that noise, including mine were at idle. At higher rpms I think everything is moving too fast for that to be your problem. I did fix my knock that way but as I said it only did it at idle and only when the oil was hot enough to create a thinner film on the gears.

I've been trying to eliminate certain things . Did a valve adjustment Injectors seem to be ok. I get that ticking sound when the engine is warmed up leaving me to believe the slaping of the gears because of the oil being thinner than at start up. Did you do the procedure yourself or did a shop do it??? trying to get it by process of elimination. On the cummings forum the guy used the steering wheel puller.I just can seem to separate the pump from the gears using that puller.

The only way to make it easier to remove is to pull the entire front cover off the engine and heat the gear a little. If your puller is turning while you are tighening the pusher bolt you will have to hold the puller with a wrench or something to keep it in place, also make sure you are on the center of the pump shaft, its pretty easy to get it off the shaft and on the gear since you cant see anything down there. If you are still under warranty Dodge has a TSB out for loose fitting drive gears causing noise, under the TSB they will replace the gears if they determine thats the cause of the noise.
