Converter without valvebody?
How many guys have put a converter in without doing the valve body. I spoke with Banks Suncoast Ats Goerend and they all have something different to say. The mech at the Dodge dealer says converter only and turn the pressure up in the stock valve body while adjusting the bands. Also the truck is stock no programmer no exhaust but I tow 12,500 lbs and don't like the slip of the stock converter when leaving the line to get the load moving. It builds so much heat. When I put a Banks Triple disk in my 97 Ford it was like night and day off the line trans temps etc.. But some of the above companies are saying a new converter won't help without the valvebody others say the valve body isn't needed. Well which is it.
Any input would be great.
Thanks Marc

A converter without and VB work is a good upgrade. It works quite well as long as you are not adding any power and not towing heavy all the time. You can't exploit a good TC to its limit but it will help.
Heavy towing and more power needs to have some more pressure applied to the clutches and bands or you will slip them. A simple shift kit will do that quite well and really augment what a good tight TC will give you.
Once you fix the TC so it transfers power and the clutch doesn't slip the problems move inward to the next weak point(s), chiefly the direct clutches and the intermediate band. If you want to use the extra power and tighter TC to its maximum then you will need to address the low stock line pressures.
