Concerned about Blue Smoke?

Hi, I just got a 2006 5.9L.I'am new here and this is my first diesel truck. The engine has 15,000km on it and it runs and goes great. But I did notice a problem, is that I will start it and let it warm up for 10mins or so and when I push on the throttle to take off blue smoke will come out.It will do this the first 3-4 times I push on the throttle and then it will stop.I'am not sure what it is or if it's even a concern because I noticed a few other diesel trucks doing this.

Welcome!

I wouldn't be too concerned about a little of smoke upon start up, especially if it's cool outside.

Do you know when the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Here is an excellent write up that shows how to change it if your not familiar with the process.

Smell the smoke. I bet it is fuel. Fuel does not always burn completely when the engine is cold and will cause white smoke or blue smoke. If you are not towing and live where you can drive slow lightly loaded for a mile or so I would recommend taking off after 30 sec to a minute of idling. This will begin warming up the engine.

Blue smoke on starting if already hot might be an oil consumption related problem. Make sure the oil is not ovefilled and that you have the correct dipstick for the engine so the level is correct. You can measure the oil when you add it and confirm the dipstick is reading right. I have seen dipstick problems on other engines create overfilling situations. check your oil consumption between changes. Otherwise you may have piston ring or valve guide issues. Not likely, but possible. More so if you have high miles like over 400k.

So now I re-read your thread. So low miles, rings not borken in. Probably still fuel. Don't idle for more than 5 minutes and put some load on it to seat the rings. sounds like nice low mileage truck!!

The smoke kinda smells like a mix of oil and diesel but it just plain stinks. It only happens when the truck sits for more than 1 hour or so and for the first few times you press of the throttle then it goes away. Thanks for the info, I really like this site.

I checked the oil level and it is down a bit.It only smokes when cold and not at start up and not while idleing.I'am out in the "smoke" on this problem.

Idleing for long periods is not helpful. Start it and go. No need to thrash it, but go ahead and drive. These things will barely warm up if idleing. You will get a lot of moisture and carbon build up if it's cold all the time. Work it.

Meanwhile make sure the oil is fresh and not way over full.

If you do have to let it idle, make sure you have high idle enabled...

The dealer can do it and so can certain programmers.

Very important, when you check your oil make sure it has been sitting at least 15min. after a drive. It takes a while for it to drain back to the pan.

I notcied that the high idle will kick in after a bit of idleing. In the end is the blue smoke normal? It does smell like a mix of diesel and oil and it only happens when the engine was off for more than 1 hour and when you press on the throttle the first few times other than that it will not see/smell the blue smoke.
