common for tie rod to fall off?
i was driving down rode doing about 70 with a trailer empty and i went to turn on to the interstate and the truck kept on goin straight so i got out and look and the tie rod was on the ground so i put back on and took it to the dealership where the service manager said that it was a common thing for that to happen i have never heard of it and i was wondering what yall thought about it. Thanks!

Only common if it never gets looked at during basic maintenance! Oil changes......GREASE JOB.......checking over fluid levels.....there is more to it than dumping the oil and changing the filter. If you never jack the front end up when doing maintenance, you are doing yourself a big injustice. A lot of things can be noticed ......I check tire pressures.....I fin a lot of loose front end parts just when I add air to the tire, but again....It's jacked up. If you pay someone else to service your truck, I would #1- ask them how they could have missed that! & #2 - find another shop to have your maintenance done at.

ok thanks man that makes since and i have another question since you are the go to guy would you still keep the truck or would you get rid of the truck? i mean i love the truck to death but if that happens now no telling what else is about to fall apart so i guess should i sell or keep my baby. Thanks again!

Something is just not right about that story.
When the tie rod falls off you have no steering, or steering only on one wheel. Braking can make one wheel turn all the way to the stop.
Way too casual of a response to this happenng for me. At 70 MPH with a trailer, it's a wreck.
If it did happen and you are lucky enough not to crash, it's tow time to the shop and ALL new tie rod ends.

I was gonna sy, last time I saw a tie rod fall off a truck was someone I knew and he ended up barrel rolling it with a trailer at 50mph! All due to LACK OF MAINTENENCE!!!!! I feel a little bit of sway I'm crawling under my truck! Either way....you got lucky! Play the lottery! LOL Good luck!

Not to mention the corporate liability and recall. The DOT (NHTSA) would want to know about bad designs like that. Unless it was previously worked on, which in case should be in a civil suit.
