Cold start, Dealser says one or more injectors and not covered under warranty
#16
I would remove the switch and take it to another dealer. Play dumb about a box. If it was a leaking injector I would guess that you would be growing oil in your crankcase. Sounds like the first dealer was guessing and trying to get your money. Hopefully he didn't void your warranty and if he did then I would raise cain and protest greatly. The switch, unless ti ahd a brand name on it, isn't proof of anything.

Well if having a switch mounted in the cab either with a brand name or not voids your warrenty then I am in trouble.
I would ask why they figure the injectors are cracked, with out pulling them.
I would walk away from them and find a new dealerhsip. I would even look at finding a Cummins shop and or pull them yourself as I mentioned earlier.

Im betting money they are just being diiicks, and dont want to fool with it, and just trying to weasle some money out of someone.

There is a dealer up in greeley and one in Ft collins, I would go to one of them with the switch removed. If they suspect an injector problum it is up to them to pull the injectors and verify this. i worked for a chevy dealer a few years ago and if a truck came in with a posible waranty issue ( like the duramax injector problems) we would pull them and verify it, this should not cost you anything. They saw your guages and started snooping. I have heard of plenty of stock trucks with the same sort of injector issues so I would dfinitly try some where else. Also my 06 has been starting fine and I live near you so there is definitly something going on there it is not that cold yet.

faulty injectors will not send fuel back to the tank on a cp3 pumped truck, someone correct me if I am wrong. the fuel is returned from the rail via the cp3 itself. bad injectors leak fuel into the cylinders causing smoke, poor running, and fuel dilution in the oil. Like i stated this morning, make him prove it. Stuff the moss magnuson act where it really is uncomfortable.
One of the gentlemen suggested the heaters, check it with a meter. just because the light on the dash is coming on, doesnt mean the heater is working. that just is an indicator output from the relay. Good luck buddy.
I hate dealers, and other than I have voided my warranty in every way possible, I am still my own warranty station. It is a shame that I know more about these engines than the clowns paid to repair them. But who am I to know? I am just a lowly diesel instructor.

The injecters can leak at the transfer tube from the outside of the head to the injecter. If leaking there it will return higher than normal fuel volume to the tank. This will also cause long cranking due to the cp-3 haveing trouble building rail pressure @ cranking speed.I do agree that the dealer is messing with you. That switch could be for anything.Fog lights for instance.I would take it to another dealer. Also, depending on what "BOX" you had.It should be nearly impossible for the dealer to find through the ECU.A box by definition fools the ECU by modifying the sensor inputs to the ECU.The ECU never knows it's there.A downloader is another story.Take it to another dealer,& good luck.

Wow, This forum is awesome. I read the posts where qzilla replied to the statement that his box left a footprint. It seems that it does not and I had no codes prior to taking the truck in so I now know with certainty that the dealership lied to me in order to get me to pony up some bucks and allow the tech to do the work and get the customer to pay for the time instead of the low rates that DC is willing to pay them. (I got that from another post on the quadzilla box also) link here https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...e+relief+valve
Paperwork states they “found vehicle had a power up kit @ one time wiring for power level **** still installed” It does not say that he found it via the ECM also which is what the service writer verbally told me.
Thanks to this forum. I have 3 other shops that I can take my truck to that will diagnose the problem accurately and most likely do the warranty work as well. One shop was recommended by the parts guy at Cummins service shop in Colorado who spent 20 mins on the phone with me. (He also has a box on his truck and gets work done at the place he recommended)
He also gave me the name of a company in Denver that can most likely test the injectors and get new ones if needed.
A forum member gave me the name of a performance shop and great contact as well which I plan on contacting and discussing the scenario to get his thoughts. As far as getting the truck fixed I’m in great shape which was a concern to me as I would not trust the dealer I took it to fix a flat tire on my bike.
I’ll look at the pressure relief valve and see if that may be the cause and also check the grid heater operation before I do much else. I’ll be out of town for several days also and the wife will need it so I’ll have to get the truck to a shop when I return.
My plan: Since I bought the truck used, with 15k on it, I will be asking the dealer for the printout of the diagnostic test that shows that I had a box on the truck. I’ll let him know that my lawyer will be contacting the place where I bought the truck and be asking for repayment for injector replacement. I’ll ask for his direct line and the tech’s direct line so the lawyer can call them for statements as needed. Since he likes to sweat people a little and thinks it’s fun. I’ll turn the tables on him a little and see how he likes it.

And LOL@ at the lawyer, let us know how much the service writer enjoyed sweating it out.

There are 3 separate fuel returns that all tie into the chassis return line at the fuel filter housing. CP3 return, Injector return, and DBV return(or fuel rail pressure relief valve). There are flowrate specs for each that are used to determine if there is a fuel system problem and what subsystem could be causing the problem.
The dealership is not being all that bad about it. They admitted that the injectors are not cracked, that is why there is no fuel in the crankcase. The injector return flow test is telling them that an injector is bad, which is the correct way to diagnose an injector problem.
However, people on this board are right about the switch. Just having a switch is not cause for warranty rejection.
You should keep on this. Going to another dealer is not going to help. The new dealer will also have to submit to STAR. He will give them your VIN and they will look it up to see that your warranty has been voided. STAR will then NOT approve any warranty parts, so you new dealer would NOT be reimbursed for any repairs made to your truck.

Update
I called the service writer this morning and asked to have him save the printout so I could give it to my lawyer and we can use that to go after the dealership where I purchased the truck. I explained further to him that the switch had no markings and per the lawyer, there was no way to be able to prove that it was for a power box and that the printout was the only way I was going to be able to show proof.
He put me on hold so he could talk to the tech, a few mins later he comes back and tells me that there is no printout but it was seen on the scan tool and codes had come up indicating that there was a box. I asked him how I was supposed to be able to show proof that there was a box then? On hold I go for about 5 mins and I knew what was next.. the Service manager..
The service manger gets on the phone,, try’s the same story that a box was on the truck etc etc.. I went through the same conversation about the proof I needed.
In a nutshell, he tells me the easiest way to do this is to remove the switch and take it to another dealer and the truck has not been flagged. He said he could not maintain his integrity with his techs if he swapped ends and told them to fix the truck .
Funny thing is that he knew who I was through my stepdaughter and my in laws and his mom and dad have been lifelong friends.
So I’ll follow his suggestion.
Thanks again EVERYBODY for all the help and suggestions. You probably saved me several thousand dollars by responding.

Cool deal(sorta)
Just wire it up to some fog lights or something
But yeah, might get better results with a clean slate at another dealership, doesnt sound like theyre willing to help anyway, sounds more like theyre trying to scare you away because of it being warranty, instead of customer getting the NON-KY treatment.

It would seem that I really can't argure with them, They didn't pull one and verify it was bad and to do that "and" if they still do not cover under warranty, then I'm out several hundred more dollars. I accept the fact that the pressure box I was using, may have caused the problem. I'd love for warranty to cover it, but is it really worth the fight and hassle? Don't get me wrong, I can't afford this at all and will probably have to drive it as it is but do I really have a chance in getting it covered?
