Clunk but Not A/C
Just curious, I have noticed a couple times the famous Air conditioning "Clunk" when you first turn it on. SOunds IDENTICAL but the only thing is, the A/C was off at the time. No other ***** on... Has this happened to anyone? Belt seems to be in good shape, only 29,000 miles on it origional factory. Like I said, has only happend on initial start up a few times but was not the A/C.... Thx

Me either, I figure since it's running so well I must have caught it " Just Perfect" when turning it off the time before!! Glad to see I am not the only one and it is soooo sporadic!

With some vehicles they will turn on the compressor at start up to circulate the oil in the compressor. It's one of those compressor saving features. I don't know if it does it on our trucks but do a test and see. Have someone else crank it while you watch the compressor clutch. Just a thought.

Mine will make a bit of noise a few seconds after it's started, especially if the grid heaters are on or if the batteries are down a bit...
I kind of wonder if it could be the alternator, that when the field coils get energized it puts an abrupt load on the belt?
On mine anyway, the AC compressor will run when the AC button is not turned on, when the dial is set to defrost. In addition to exercising the compressor, I think it is also intended to dehumidify.

Ok, so that clunk is "normal" for our trucks when you turn on the A/C.
Great... Yet another "feature" that freaks me out until I find out that it's normal. Kinda like the whole dimming lights thing in the winter when you first start the truck. LOL

BTW, my truck makes that A/C clunk too, and has done it many times without the A/C on. Soooooo....it must be fairly common.

Dealer told me the clunk was normal, when the A/C is off the doors to the outside close, and when you turn the A/C on they open???? whatever... ,mines been doing it for a long time and everthing still works OK.It doesnt always do it either, which makes me wonder even more about it.Just before my warranty expired I asked Dodge about it,the tech even told me they dont have that many problems with the A/C unit.Dont know if I believe that one or not.

Mine just started the "clunk" when turned on about two months ago (its in storage in CA at the moment). Glad to have read on DTR that it was normal or I also would have freaked. But back to RoperTeachers original post---mine has not clunked when the AC was off except when the defrost was on.

Mine does the clunk with the A/C off also. Started a thread last year about it but no one responded to it. Anyway I had the wife start the truck while I watched the compressor. The compressor rotated about 1 revolution with the A/C turned off, then turn the A/C on and it makes the same clunk again. Other than that it works perfectly. Wish I knew why it does that, my mind would finally get some rest. BTW it doesn't do it on the first start up of the day, it only seems to do it on all the other start up's throughout the day.
