Clack In 04 Cummins

I recently brougt my truck in to the dealer for service and while it as there I asked them to check out a clacking noise coming from the front part of the engine.Well they said it was a lifter but it was still within normal range.I can't for the life of me figure out how they came up with that answer. The following day I towed my trailer to get serviced and the engine was claking so loud the my mechanic asked me what was wrong with my truck.(the oil pressure is fine)I have spoken to Cummins and they said that Dodge is the only one that can do warrenty work on my truck. They said without seeing the truck that it could be alot of things maybe an injector or a cracked piston but could not really answer with out seeing it of course.I will be calling the dealer today but was just trying to find out if anybody else has had this problem. The truck is an 04 3500 dually with only 9700 miles.Any help would be appreciated. thank you in advance.....

Get the diesel service guy to turn off the injectors one at a time to see if the noise changes. If it changes my guess is the injector. The end injectors seem to be the common ones.

Run some Power Service through it, especially if you are going to pull the trailer. I suspect you are getting a little carbon build up. Give it a try for a couple tanks.

Check the valve clearance.I've had one that the rocker arm adjuster nut backed out all the way,& it sounded terrible.Needs to be set to .010" int.,& .020" exh.
