Not sure, but CI-4 is what Cummins recommends....

CJ4 is the latest spec- the CI4 you picked up is the previous formulation. You will be fine with it. Most likely, in your owner's manual it recommended CI4 when your truck came out. No problems running the latest spec, though- supposed to be less wear. But that remains to be seen.

Matter of fact the CI-4 is a much better oil than the CJ-4. Just saw a write up on the different oils, and while the CI-4 Delo was one of the top rated, the CJ-4 Delo was one of the lowest in the rating. Wish I was out there to purchase some of the that oil. Have been looking every where to get the last of the CI-4.

Chrysler just recently discontinued the CI-4 and now can only order the CJ-4. It looks like I'll be going to something else next change also. We'll see what Wally World has on the shelf.

Why is the CI4 oil better than the CJ4?

Old thread, but CI4 has a higher TBN than the new CJ4 and lasts longer.

CI4 has much more zinc and phosphates compared to the newer, crappier, CJ4 due to emissions junk from the EPA. The new stuff is for the newer engines but is supposed to be backward compatible. As stated the TBN is much less and it will not be suitable for long oil change intervals.

Buy all the CI4 Delo in that store... I would.

Nothing to do with multi-grade - both the CI & CJ oils are 15W-40 (by definition multigrade oils). Althought the CI oils have superior lubricating qualities compared to the CJ oils, it's next to impossible to get CI-4. Once API makes a new formulation the old one becomes obsolete. The new CJ oils have a lower TBN because of lower quantities of phosphorous & zinc, which in turn are required to meet emissions in the 2007 and later motors. I'd be buying the CI oil if I could but can't find it anymore. Just did a Blackstone analysis to make sure that the CJ oil was good for a 10K oil change interval. Apparently the CJ oil is doing fine. My Blackstone results are posted in another thread.

You can still get CI4 in bulk but not quarts or gallons. Somebody on here said they went down to their local auto parts store asking about buying it in 5 gallon buckets and they scored. I'm checking with Oreilly's about that tomorrow.
