Don't push in the odometer reset and then turn on the key. The dash goes through a reset! Gauges and lights flipping on, thought I screwed something up! 55,850/1385hrs.

1 it is one factor the dealer uses to determine excessive idle time
2 some guys change oil by hour meter not mileage
3 overall average shows whether you mainly drive city or highway
4 because it's there

That is some hauling booty right there. 255,516 miles / 24 months service = 10,646.5 average miles per month!!!!!

Think it will see a million before your done with it?

Any major break downs? Do you run any addititives in the fuel? What is your oil change interval and what type oil/filter do you run....if you don't mind me asking you these questions out of curiosity? Thanks.

OK I can go along with #2 "some guys change oil by hour meter not mileage" but why?

#1 How can the dealer tell the idle time from the hours? could be LA, CA traffic a 1 mile an hour parking lot with backed up traffic everyday of your work week, then the hours will be high but you have not been idleing, then again what is wrong with idleing?

#3 I know if I drive in the city or country or highway so what do I need the hours for?

#4 I have to agree with this one, but ?

jaxfl1 - #2 guys/gays who change by hour instead of milage are usually used to other machinery ( typically farms) that are slow running or idleing lots therfore oil is change when so many hours are put on it regardless of mileage. ie power genetors after so run time hours the oil is to be change, no mileage there.
#1 dealer will assume that when the hours are high and the mileage is low then you are ideling more than driving miles/hrs and thats only 1 check they do. It's bad on their part but it is a quick assement. Without getting into it there is lots of info on this board and others about why you should not idle a 3rd generation cummins truck.
#3 yes you know but so does anyone who checks the hours on that truck. average appears to be 36 to 38 miles/hr. if you are about this then you probably drive more highway than city. if you are below the the reverse is true.
#4 well what can say use it if want if not o well

Just tried my 99. It started with the word chec for a few seconds, then flashed every segment of the led in the odomoter, then bottomed all the gauges (everything, speedo and tach too), then centered all the gauges, then went to the high end of all of them, then showed all the lights. I never knew I had a tans temp light. But I still got no hour reading.
