Check engine light just came on?

I've got 2250 miles on my truck, just went and topped off a half tank of fuel. Went and sat idling on the scales at the truck stop while they were weighing me and my engine light came on. I turned it off and back on a couple times, removed the fuel cap and put back on, also drained any water that might have been in the fuel filter, (while engine shut off).

I just got off the phone with the dealer. First question he asked was if I just fueled up. He said to check the gas cap and if it doesn't go away in 2 or 3 days, to call them back, but it's OK to drive as long as the engine light is not flashing. I told him I took the cap off and put back on, but he said it should go out in a couple days.

Now I might be going camping this weekend and pulling a travel trailer around 6000 lbs or so up to the mountains. Should I be worried about this engine light?

Can't help you with what it might be, try the key cycle and see if you get a code.

I don't recall the number of starts it takes, but it's less than 10 I believe for the light to reset if there is no continuing problem.

I was wondering about the code that you can get to flash. Can you tell me how to make it do that? Turn the key to on position 3 times, then hit the brake pedal, or something like that?

Thanks.

IIRC, cycle the key on/off leaving it on, on the third or fourth cycle, takes some practice, you may get the cluster test a few times instead of the code program.

I cycled the key three times and left at on position, code P2509 came up. I haven't looked it up yet, but my engine light went off.

Thanks for the help guys.

Mine did same thing with around 2500 miles on it and again around 5000. I forgot what codes it came up with. Took it to dealer the first time and the second time it went away in about a day.

Wow, that doesn't sound good. Doesn't sound like the fuel cap being loose like the dealer said.

Is there a database some where that deciphers these codes? How did you find that? Thanks.

Can you clear the codes in these trucks by doing a captive discharge? (disco the batt's negatives and touch it to the poss post)

I got the same code tonight. It went away about 30 mins later. Did you talk to the dealer to find out what exactly this means?

My light came on one morning a few days ago. Got to work, phoned the dealer, made an apt for Tuesday.
Went home that night, light went out, so now do I still take it in or not?

Check the code yourself and then decide. Turn the key on and off quickly 3 or 4 times and the P#### should display in you odometer screen. Then go here and see what it means...

Okay, got a P0111

Which at that link shows up as :
Answer: P0016 Crankshaft/Camshaft Timing Misalig...10.01.2004 = new/updated FAQs in the last 7 days

How do I find what P0111 means?

<EDIT>
Did a search, found this:
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ine+code+P0111

THe code's cleared I think, I'll check the sensor to make sure it's connected (had it off a while ago doing gauges), if it comes on again I'll bring it in.

Where's a good spot to check codes?
(Other than doing a search here)
