check engine light came on while under heavy load
I have an 06 dually 6 speed and was towing about 17,000lbs up about a 5 mile long steep hill (the grape vine)and was close to floored in 5th gear. all of the sudden I heard a chime from the dash, the same sound you hear when your low fuel light comes on. after looking at the dash I realized that my check engine light was on. I was running it real hard I guess and had it loaded heavy . my question is, is there some safety feature, maybe a high exhaust temp sensor that might make this light come on? the truck ran fine and nothing seemed different and the light stayed on for the rest of the day but was out the next morning when I started the truck. anyone have any idea what was going on? seems like I should be able to run it floored all day if I want to. I dont have a bunch of mods on it , just a little 50hp box. thanks guys for any help

No codes for High EGT's or anything like that. I beat a set of gauges would be nice for time like this. Not sure what could of happened. Pull the code with the key on and off three times and post it. It is still should be in the computer.

sounds right to me as well. I was mashing on it pretty hard . as long as it doesnt hurt anything I guess I wont worry about it. never could get it to show a code anywhere. tried for 30 minutes.

The key sequence to retreive the codes is key OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON, leaving the key in the on position the third time. It will display the codes,if any, in the odometer window, or it will display -done- if there are no codes. Hope this helps ya!

well starting from off, I went on off, on off,on and left it in the on position and nothing. I tried doing it fast, I tried waiting 2 seconds inbetween each turn, tried everything 25 times and nothing.

Sometimes it seems like it just won't work. I've found doing it fast and making sure not to go past off or past on usually does the trick. You will know when it works even if there aren't any codes because the odometer will display "-done-".
