Its been on the truck for a few years now (installed at my first oil change) and was one of the best investments/improvements I've done to the truck. Some worry warts think the little lever will open by itself; in my circle I've never heard of one opening.
BTW, welcome .......

Ok guys, i am REAL new to these stinky diesels. But it is the only way to haul my hot rod to shows, i just picked this truck up yesterday from Houston TX and drove stright through to Albuq. about 15hrs. boy what a trip. But i will admit this is the best dam truck i have ever owned and with only 17k miles on it for 21000.00 i am VERY HAPPY. My little f-150 4x4 would barely pull my 5000lb trailer but this bad boy is going to do great, bone stock 5.9 laramie addition and very comfortable, I got 22.7 mpg on the trip home at 70mph, right under 2krpm. i am stoked that ford maybe got 16 mpg.
Ok enough of that, i am going to change my oil for the first time for me in a diesel, is it just like any other car, oil around the filter, fill the filter up hand tight and 1/2 turn, then fill up with oil??? i am using Rotilla.
What else am i going to need to know that is out of the relm.
This site is great for this i have been on here about a month or so asking questions and the responce is fantastic.
thanks in advance.

You have it newbie1. I do mine down from the top, very slightly loosen the filter till it is just loose enough to unscrew by hand but not yet leaking, and take a plastic grocery bag (no holes) and (I put a half a dozen dirty paper towels in it) feed the bag down and under the filter and put the filter in the bag, hold on the the bag handles and unscrew the filter and let the filter fall in the bag, lift it out from the top. You won't spill a drop. I wish I could remember who to credit the idea to, but it works great.

I bet the first oil filter is so tough to get off because they don't apply any oil to the seal before they spin on the filter.
Remember to use a HUGE oil pan. I used one which I thought would work the first time and it JUST was enough. Also, don't use one of those pans that have a chamber below the pan where the oil can drain to. The hole, depending on who makes the pan, may not be large enough to keep up with the oil coming out of the engine. I use a radiator pan....which usually comes in larger sizes...and is completely open. Works great!
As for the filter, I let the truck sit for a few hours before changing the oil. Remove the intake tube and you'll get clear access to the filter from on top. Waiting a few hours seems to let the oil settle in the filter & housing where I won't even spill a drop.
