Changing injectors
How hard is it? repair shops say unless you are a certified diesel tech don't even attempt to change an injector. I am an above average mechanic, and have an above average set of tools, no specialty diesel tools though. My #5 injector went out recently and cost $1200 to fix. I use this truck to pull a trailer ever day, it needs to be tip top. how hard can it be?

It is not that hard. I did mine myself, and I'm like you an average do it yourself mechanic. I printed off the directions off Dynomite Diesel's website. Just follow the directions and you will be fine. The hardest part for me was prying the injectors out. I'm not sure if they make a special tool for this or not, but if not it's still not too bad. If you have any questions PM me.

There is a specific procedure to re-assemble the injector in the engine. Find the service manual and follow the procedure and all will be well.
Did you get and entire injector or just the nozzle? If the injector itself is bad a nozzle won't fix it.

Diagnosing a bad injector
At about 50,000 I had two injectors blow the tips out , had them replaced under warranty. New they were bad because oil coming out of crank case vent. 215,000 had the same problem with oil coming out my crank case vent. Don't know any diesel mechanics locally, so I took it to the dealer. 1200.00 for #6 injector. The mechanic told me the tip was fine but fuel was leaking around an Oring. My question is how can you tell the injector is bad by just looking at it? Could'nt the mechanic have just changed out the Oring? Took the Dr. P box off and will probably leave it off. I have had it on the truck since day one.

Pressure boxes do shorten injector life.
There is a special too that will remove the injector body from the head; however, I normally just use a simple pry bar under the hold down. It comes out quite easily.

youll be alright. just stay organized and CLEAN! Im 19 and I changed all six of my injectors. Just take your time. Most of the write ups I have seen are pretty good. So you have a good start. The best tool I used was the engine barring tool to get the truck Top Dead Center (TDC) I ended up using an inverted screwdriver to pry the injectors out and it worked pretty nicely. They do make a tool to pull them out but it is very expensive. Goodluck!
