Catalytic Converter in '03 or Early '04?

Did the 2003 to early 2004 HO diesels come stock with a catalytic converter? If so, what is a good aftermarket converter with reasonable flow?

Thanks,
Stew

The HO did not come with a cat. The SO model does have one.

The 03 and 04 models are Cat free unless from California. I think the Cat was added on the 04.5 models and above.

If you have one, and take it off (not that restrictive in my experience) keep it around just in case. They are a Fed emissions requirement.

Not exactly. The SO California models in 2003 and 2004 do have them. And a lot of the 2nd gens have them too. But in 2004.5 they all got them.

Thanks everyone. I'm looking to repower my Excursion with the 03-04.5 HO and I want to stay legal.

Ex,

Get an '03 HO or an '04 HO made before Jan 1, 2004. These are the 305/555 models. They get the best mileage and had no cats. After Dec 31, 2003 they are 04.5 models and are different. Still fine, of course, but had cats and got a bit worse Mileage.

To find out which one you are looking at, look at the valve cover on the driver's side and read the specs. 305 HP is the one I'm talking about. 325 HP is the 04.5 model.

For more power just get a Smarty.

No cat here(04)-oregon.
Just a Kommiefornia thing-do not take it off unless you save it for the next SMOG test
Many have tossed the cat and many are sorry they need a new cat to visit the DEQ !
