Cam / Injection Timing

OK, bare with me on this one. I am trying to find out if what I hear is true. I heard that cummings while working towards cleaner emissions put a extra fuel spray at the end of the operation cycle prior to exhaust to 1 heat the cat up and two to burn up fumes. I am trying to see what I can do to exstend my milage and prevent cylinder wash that is not needed. Anyone else done this or research this really interested in doing this.... Thanks in advance..

Ben

Its the 3rd injection event and your 06 has it. It reduces the NOx by increase EGT's and the delayed timing reduces the cylinder pressure and combustion temp.

And there is no "g" in Cummins.

My appologies will not include a "g" no more... So that helps confirm what I was looking at and thinking about. Is there a way to turn off the extra spray? Which cam is the best to help the situation?

There is no way to turn it off at this point. A Smarty or Smarty Jr will be your best bet for moving it to the point where its not as bad.

I have the Colt Cam Stage 1, its the same grind as the PDR and Hamilton 175/206. Its the most mile grind out there, and removes the in-cylinder EGR from the cam.

It does a good job, and I seem to be seeing improved mileage from it. I haven't had it long enough to do a UOA to check on soot thou.

I do really like how the engine runs with it now, a little cooler and a little more solid at lower rpms.

That in cylinder egr thing just bugs me. I cant help but think it is adding unneeded heat and cylinder wash. Well seems I got a good line up of things to do then.
1. Gauges
2.Airdog
3.Smarty
4.Cam
5.SMF n clutch

unless something goes then I have to change my priorities...LOL

here is what you need to do to remove the in cylinder egr. change the camshaft out to a pdr or colt custom low rpm high torque cam. install a turbo back exhaust . i like the 5" farm boys diesel with donaldson m090072 resonator and a m101181 muffler. get a smarty jr ans set it on default tow. last get 35 hp nozzles from ddp. this combination removes the egr, increases mpg by 40% lowers egt by300*, and removes 75% of the soot in the oil. the extra 200 ftlbs of torque is not bad either

The combo does do great, I have mostly the same setup, but run a 4" with a Donaldson (no cat) and stock nozzles...

Someday I will run the small DDP nozzles, but for now the SW2 of the Jr is plenty and can still get hot enough when towing at high elevation that I want turbo before nozzles.

That is pretty much what I had put together. Thank you it is great to know that someone has already done it with very good results in my book. Anytime you can reduce the soot in the oil, lower egt helping an engine last longer while also increasing torque it is a good idea. Thanks again for the information.. I think I am going to get a secoind job to start this...LOL
