See, I think there are going to be alot of trucks that are going to sit 'cuz they know it won't pass visual, (never mind with the unemployment issues not being able to afford the CA tax-increased 5/09) The state is going to see the loss in dmv renewals and then start bending the rules like what was done on the good ole muscle cars.
nothing like registering your satelite in another state due to it being a high compression purple stick'd 440/4spd that never stood a chance with a tailpipe sniff stick. Or a cj7 sporting an amc 401. gotta pay to play or move out of the state....... or know the rules and find your loop holes.
I am not supportin g suggesting or condoning the above but i know that in this state there are few ways around what they write in black and white and with my rigs the best option i have found is to install a diesel in a pre 1975 rig or to rebuild my cj5 with a custom home built frame, replacement tub and an amc 401 vs trying to dabble in the land of ever changing smog reg's. kind of like the TARP rules we'll change em as we go. my 03 can go back to stock in 2 hours i woont like it but i can do it otherwise my toy's are pre smog so the state can sit on it and spin now. I play by thier rules and push them to the limits at times but there isn't much more they can do about it unless they retroactively roll back their own regs. if they do that i have contingency plans..... which include a realtor, moving van and multiple jo applications.

Potentially interesting related info:

Here are some of the most interesting conclusions from the authors’ study:
Anticipating a “more taxes =better schools, etc.” counter-argument, the authors compared New Hampshire to New York and California:
My mundane conclusion is the stupid liberal politicians are wasting alot of money and ruining the country. JMHO.

Here are some of the most interesting conclusions from the authors’ study:
The tax differential between low-tax states (e.g., Texas and Tennessee) and high-tax states (e,g. California and Ohio) is widening. This makes a move from one state to the other financially profitable both in lower tax bills and more job opportunities.
For every day from 1998 through 2007, at least 1,100 people moved from the nine highest income-tax states to the nine no-income tax states.
During the 1998-2007 period, the no-income tax states created 89% more jobs and had a 32% faster growth in personal income compared to the high-income tax states.
During the period 2002-2005, states that invoked a “soak the rich” tax hike experienced a significant reduction in the number of rich people paying taxes in these states relative to the national average.

The Live Free or Die State has no income or sales tax, yet it has high-quality schools and excellent public services. Students in New Hampshire public schools achieve the fourth-highest test scores in the nation — even though the state spends about $1,000 a year less per resident on state and local government than the average state and, incredibly, $5,000 less per person than New York. And on the other side of the ledger, California in 2007 had the highest-paid classroom teachers in the nation, and yet the Golden State had the second-lowest test scores.
Finally, no opinion piece like this can forget taking a well-deserved shot at New Jersey:
Or consider the fiasco of New Jersey. In the early 1960s, the state had no state income tax and no state sales tax. It was a rapidly growing state attracting people from everywhere and running budget surpluses. Today its income and sales taxes are among the highest in the nation yet it suffers from perpetual deficits and its schools rank among the worst in the nation — much worse than those in New Hampshire. Most of the massive infusion of tax dollars over the past 40 years has simply enriched the public-employee unions in the Garden State. People are fleeing the state in droves.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm in upstate,sc too. When's the last time you worried about your truck meeting emmisions nick? haha................................same here.
CA needs to fall off the country. They're killing us with this environmental junk that foreign countries don't have to deal with. Not just in cars, but in the factories. And the last time i checked, the air from japan and china doesn't have to go through a wall to get here. its kinda like peeing in the ocean.
