the letter we got from BAR and the training our service man got at his recent smog training was 1998 and newer. visual inspection to include intake manifold, exhaust manifold, turbo, Cat ect. any system that is equipt with an OBD II setup will be tested. snap throttle test for opicity and visual inspection both

its bad its ugly and so far the referees are not willing to discuss any options outside of manufacturer specs since very little has a CARB # and state and federal law for years have stated that it is illegal to change without a federal or state approval i am not sure what leg any of us are going to stand on. ive rounded up a he351, air box ect and i have also registerd my truck in one of the depression areas that for gas vehicles are exempt from testing in the hope that they might roll that over to diesels in the case they dont i am ready in one weekend to roll my rig back to close enough to stock that unless you are inclined to pull the snail shell off my turbo you wont find the ported out exhaust housing, ported wastegate and upgraded compressor size since stock was smaller on the 03's. myu ats manifold had a cummins part number stamped in it now where it used to say ATS. i am not playing this game again i remember what happened to us guys who had 440's in baracudas that stock came with 318's....... bend over or bend the rules as far as you can.

Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I understand this only applies to vehicles weighing less than 8,500 lbs? If so, I should be good to go since I’m way over that weight but my Beetle TDI will not be so lucky.
If I have to go through this **** inspection, it is easy for me to reinstall my OEM intake horn, grid heater and air box. However I don’t know if they will say something about my Banks intercooler?

Pretty much for OBD all manufacturers had their own little system. What OBDII did was make them all uniform.
Its a good thing then where I'm moving to in San Diego is far in BFE that I don't have to worry about smog.

most the guys i know are waiting to see but a handfull are starting to collect the parts to remove thier twins and get close enough that it looks stock for the inspection and they are downsizing injectors to make sure the smoke isnt an issue oon the opacity test.

See, I think there are going to be alot of trucks that are going to sit 'cuz they know it won't pass visual, (never mind with the unemployment issues not being able to afford the CA tax-increased 5/09) The state is going to see the loss in dmv renewals and then start bending the rules like what was done on the good ole muscle cars.

The muffler shouldn't be an issue, it's like a cat back system. As long as anyone hasn't played with the cat, it should be okay.

Smog Check for diesel-powered vehicles will consist of a visual inspection of the emission control components, and On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) test, and a visible smoke inspection. The inspection will include 1998 and newer diesel-powered vehicles under 14,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
