Burned transmission fluid
Well, with 47L on the ticker of my '03 CTD dually I find today that my tranny fluid is burned. Absolutely no red left. I just checked it last month! I have noticed about a 3 mpg loss over the last several weeks, I guess that's why.
Now the fun begins. I'm going to take it to the dealer from whom it was purchased by the previous owner and see what happens. I am still in the drive train warranty by a mile, but I'm sure Chrysler (hmmm, no more DC) will try to mess with me on a bone stock truck that has not see a load over 10K, and doesn't even tow often (I know... a waste of a good dually, but I'm trying to get my hauler and buggy done).
So, let's get the keyboard mechanics going and try to diagnose the failed component(s).
Symptoms/situation:
1. Burnt tranny fluid (like dirty water, no red left but no particles I was able to see, prolly due to magnet in pan)
2. Over 10% loss in fuel mileage in about 6 weeks time
3. Seems to not be shifting right
4. Sometimes clunking noise when engaging gear, especially reverse (checked driveshaft and nothing loose with wiggle and twist tests)
5. Bone stock, minus removal of turbo silencer
6. 47K miles, easy life
I look forward to your "diagnosis"
This post is not said or meant to be arseholish, I am sincerely curious.
I say at least torque converter and probably a clutch pack or two, too.

First their going to tell you that servicing it is YOUR responabilty. The new memo put out by Chrysler says if fliud looks good only do filter and top fliud off.If fliud looks burnt use a FLIUD EXCHANGE MACHINE(like a BG) Doing a fliud exchage can make a world of differance in auto tranny performance. If the pan is down and tons of depris in it then it has a big issue. If not service it and drive it and see how it performs.
