Blown U-joints / towing too much weight??
Got my 04 dually cummins 6 sp. manual trans. into the dealer with a bad vibration, they diagnosed both center & rear U-joints are shot. Truck has 16k miles. I put a chip in it, and now they won't warranty it. I use it to tow a heavy trailer (approx. 18k lbs), of course I didn't tell them that, though. Is this too much weight for this truck? If I install heavy duty U-joints instead of these garbage factory ones should I expect to run into other problems down the road... like rear end problems, and/or engine & tranny problems? I was under the impression this truck could handle this kind'a weight with no problem... maybe I was wrong??
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mark, I don't think that is too much weight at all. I pull a backhoe and dozer with the trailer and all over 23k each. I have 108k on my auto and original joints. (Maybe I need to check mine better). My 6Spd has 56k and it is 100% pulling the machines.
I can't speak to your warranty issues.

While the motor and transmission are getting on towards bullet proof, the u-joints are garbage, and the jury is still out on the rear ends. The factor joints can't be greased, and I've heard on here somewhere they use heat during the installation of them at the factory, which can sometimes lead to the (irreplaceable) grease being cooked out.
