It is about 10-15*F here in SLC and I have mine plugged in any time it might sit for more then about 2 hours.

Just curious, is there an advantage to keeping the engine warmer for long periods of time, other than an easy start and faster heat? Better for the motor etc?

Is there too long of a period to leave it plugged in? I know my dad used to leave his powerstroke plugged in all night!

For me it seems like there is no difference between three hours and all night. Seems like it reaches a point where it cant warm the block up any more. As was said, a timer is the way to go. I use a cheap little wal-mart timer (rated 900W and no ground plug) but am going to get a good one someday.

I agree with Bark. I've done some experimenting on two, approximately 10 degree mornings. One morning I'd had it plugged in all night (8 hrs) and the second morning had a timer set to turn it on 2 hrs before I left for work. The heater blew warm air both mornings and got up to temp at the same time. My advice is to get a timer and set it for two hours before you leave. It saves on the electric bill and maybe it will make Al Gore a little happier your saving energy!!!!

I've been a rotating shift worker subject to call out at any time all my working life, so I've always left my vehicles plugged in 24/7 in the cold months (which is 7 for me here). It doesn't hurt anything but the power bill.

Yup. I got the timer after realizing that it was like having more than seven 100 watt light bulbs burning all of the time (thats with the smaller heater). I never have that many lights on in my house.

Someone did the math on here once, it wanst expensive to have it pugged in all night. When I get home from work, 7pm, I plug it in and leave it till I go to work in the morning, 6am.
