Black soot through exhaust and on bumper
I don't really notice it too much during the day but, at night I can darken the cars behind me with anything more than 1/2 throttle. Also, the bumper and rear panel constantly get heavy soot build-ups over a months period. This condition has been present since day 1 of ownership.
Is this normal?
Is the engine running rich?
Is this indicitave of any other issue(s)?
The truck is stock and as indicated in the signature line.
Thanks for the input!

Yes, it's normal.
No, your engine is not running rich. Diesels are "lean-burn" engines and consume all the air they need. There is no throttle valve like a gasser (at least on the 5.9's)
It's an indicator of having a catalytic converter. Your converter plugs with soot, and when you get on it the soot is blown out. It will deposit on your bumper.
Enjoy your diesel! All normal! If you see white smoke (not steam/condensation, but heavy, white smoke) at startup you may have a problem. Also, if you have heavy black smoke accompanied by knocking, you may have a problem. Other than that, a little soot is all good!

My '06 produces little smoke, even with 11K RV pulling hills. I have a chrome exhaust extension but don't believe it extends much beyond the original. There is very little soot of the front of the RV after even several thousand mile trips and it's only a few feet from the tailpipe outlet. There's virtually none on the truck.
I do try to keep exhaust temps down so that may be why, I don't know.
My truck is also totally stock, performance wise.

This is what I did to keep soot off my truck. A few others have done the same thing. Eddie Reyes was the guy that gave me the idea.

My turndown eliminated this problem and it bounces the exhaust sound off of the ground. Turndowns will leave dead spots in your yard if your leave your truck idling with the tip over the grass.
