Black fuel filter

I changed my fuel filter today and it was black in colour. I am wondering what would have caused it to go black. I had a fuel line break that was repaired under wanrantee. Is there anything I should be concerned about?
Or is this not a concern.

I guess I should have noted that the other times I repaced the filter it was not so black. Just grey in colour.
I was up in the Yukon and Alaska, I changed it just before the trip. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Mines always gray to black. A lot also depends on where you get your fuel. But black is fine. Did you clean out the bottom of the filter housing with a good lint free cloth? There is always "Extra" stuff on the bottom.

Yep,

Mine was gray to black the last change.... Of course, I didn't wipe out the bottom.... I'll do that next time, good idea..

I quit cleaning out the bottom of the canister after the first change. Seemed risky?

It's called Asphaltene. Fleetguard makes an Asphaltene Conditioner to prevent the asphaltene from prematurely blocking the filter...

I use a type of towel you could find in hospitals Lint free and works great. I also have a long pair of needle nose pliers to hold it and get down in there with.

There are others though. Different type of dish washing wash cloths work great too. Just don't let the wife know you "Borrowed" one of them

Does anyone know if biodiesel is kind of a cleaner I heard if you run a little thru there before the fuel filter change it would clean the sysytem a little more .

I find it interesting how those filter cannisters don't drain 100%.Seems a fair amount of water can and could sit in the bottom of the housing.
