Binding in front end while in 4x4..

No snow traction in 4x4
Great, I was going to ask how the 4WD works since I had an awful time getting home in the snow last week. My rear tires are spent but the fronts were still good so I figured I'd be fine in 4WD but when I engaged 4X4 I noticed the tyical engagement noise but the rears were spinning (slipping) and the fronts were not. Worst of all, I wasn't moving!. So I ordered and will install new tires today but I'm wondering if its normal for these trucks to do this.

I've owned 8 4x4 trucks including 6 Fords and 2 Dodges. All of them would wheel-hop when engaged in 4 wheel-drive and making a sharp turn, even on dry dirt and gravel roads. All wheel-drive that is used on SUV's like my wife's Toyota Highlander don't do this but all 4 wheel-drive vehicles do, that I am familiar with.

Just came back from PA and had to use the 4x4 alot. I noticed this exact thing even in 6-8 inches of snow. I thought something was wrong and I remembered posts like this before. Nature of the beast I guess.

So yours was also slipping the rears but the fronts looked as if they weren't even engaged while in snow?
And this is normal?
Anyone know how we can fix it so the torque doesn't slip out the non gripping wheels?

Normal & Good Condition
When my '06 2500 starts to do what you are describing I take it as an indication that the snow is "not as bad as it looks" and then press in the clutch and move the "fun lever" back to 2wd... There are trucks that wish they had enough traction to bind the front tires!

What I meant is that while the rears were slipping the fronts were doing nothing. Come to find out the shop that put my DTT in put my vacuum harness in wrong. Just got it back from the dealer and it seems to be working fine now.

Yup. I suspect that other trucks mentioned may not have been diesels, with about 4k lbs on the front axle empty ? With the Dodge Cummins you can keep the front end from binding in snow by putting slick highway tires on :^)
