Big Buck Failure

Big Buck Failure
For those who are unaware that there is an issue with the radiator fan clutches, read this closely... I have 200,000 miles on my 2006 and at some point my radiator fan clutch gave up the ghost. I would not know this, it never reached over 200 degrees on the two radiator temp gauges I have. But...it would not cool the air conditioner condensor and it reached peak pressure and locked up the compressor. When that happened it spun the engagement clutches until they fried and that took out the bearing and seal in the compressor. So what is the damage?
1) Compressor
1) Condensor (metal in it from the compressor bearings)
1) Accumulator
1) Lines (disposable))
1) Labor to disassemble, reassemble, vacuum system, and recharge.
Total cost? About $1,800.00. Checked with three different places all were very close in price.
So a lesson to all of my friends on this site, on a regular basis raise the hood with the air conditioner on and make sure that the radiator fan clutch is engaged and the fan is spinning. If you catch it, it may only cost you a fan clutch and not the entire air condidioning system.
If you have around 200K on your truck, consider pro active mantenance and change the fan clutch. $400.00 is cheap if you're lookinng at $1,800.00
Truck has been a great and dependable ride, so I cannot complain too loud, but if I can save you from the same experience, I won't feel so bad.

Mr Bee, I would highly doubt the Mechanic who told you that held a straight face.............
Yes, your AC Compressor dumped and it cost you bucks, but the fan had nothing to do with it.

the fan has nothing to do with your compressor giving out.. there is a temp circuit on the compressor that if it reachs a certain point that it cuts out the compressor aswell there is a preassure switch that would disengage the compressor if to much preassure was built up internally.. i think you just so happen to have a bad compressor out of the drawl.. cause i have 554k miles on my truck and i never has the fan clutch make the compressor give me issues.. and i never turn the a/c off

Been there and done this twice. About to have a 3rd compressor installed But I have never been charged more than $800.00

the fan clutch not working could cause the high side pressure to go too high but storx is right the high press switch should shut compressor off and there is also a relief valve that will leak off if it gets too high. my fan takes a while to kick on sometime and i have seen the high pressure side on my gauges go over 250psi real quick then the compressor shuts off. if the system had a leak and was empty you also could of been running compressor with no oil...
