Battery or Starter

Hey guys my truck is out of commission as of right now. With the cold weather the truck is requiring more juice from the batteries. i was to jump the truck a couple of days ago but now when i try to jump the truck all that happens is a clicking noise. the engine is not cranking at all. could this clicking noise be related to the batteries or could i now have a problem with the starter. any help would be greatly appreciated.

and also i still have power going to the power locks, radio, windows, and the lights.

thanks.

could very well be a starter motor failure.. pull it and haul it down to the local parts houseor alternator rebuild shop, they can bench test it for you...

Check the battery and ground connections too. Use a VOM to take a voltage reading from the pos battery post and then the cable to the neg post and then the cable. Repeat procedure but this time use the chassis and engine as the neg/grounds Voltage readings should be within 0.1VDC. If not, you have a bad connection. Also reach up/down and check the pos cable to the starter for tightness.

Well i got under the truck last night to check the yellow cable that goes to the starter and it was still tight and was not showing any signs of wear or tear. I dont have any equipment to check the voltage for the batteries so im out of luck there. any other suggestions.

Tap on the starter with a hammmer or punch while someone tries to start it. Mine sat for a week in the summer and the starter just stuck. Tapping on it freed it up and no more problems (yet)

I would test the batteries before I pull the starter. You can have lights and dash but no start.

You can hit Wallyworld or Radio Shack and pick up an el cheapo for about $5.99. Worth their weight in gold!

Depending on the age of your batteries I would opt for battery check. I had similar problem and then realized that 7 years was about all I could expect from the stock batteries. It became harder and harder to start and then it wouldn't, just clicked. I did jump it off and went straight to Auto Zone and gave them a couple of hundred to replace my old batteries. Couldn't believe how much quicker it spun the engine.
