Ok, so we found a meeting point. Im arguing that the "stock" band in a "stock" 48RE is not very good especially if you have a power adder. You have backed me up on that, I dont know how often a stock band will start to slip without a power adder...maybe not at all. I purchased the Smarty Jr because I was told my stock transmission would be safe, well it wasnt and I dont blame anyone but myself. Its not stock anymore but the only thing wrong in my transmission was a burnt, stretched band that I never adjusted in my 40,000 miles.

I wanna see pictures of removed bands in both the adjusted phase and non-adjusted phase of their life. I am soo dang confused on this issue!!! It looks like a real easy adj to make, especially for the 2nd gear band!

And that will tell you what?? The differences between a good band and a stretched one are in TENTHS of an inch. Doubtful you will see that in a picture.

Adjusting the band by the external screw is going to tell you one thing, if you have less than 3 threads showing above the lock nut you have a problem. To eliminate deflection, setting the clearance between the actuator lever and the actuator rod is the corrct way.

Rule of thumb is adjust it once to verify factory setting. If you have to actually adjust it again for slipping or bad shifting, get ready to replace it cuz it ain't gonna last.

No reason to be confused.

Why would the manual recommend adjusting it every 30K if it could only take being adjusted once.

I adjust mine every 30K and my trans usually gets just a little sloppy around then. After the adjustment, it shifts like a new one again. I'd be willing to bet a loose band burns out a lot faster than a correctly adjusted one. Could be why the "no adjustment" club's bands don't last.

Oh, thats easy.

Stock looking band. This is an upgrade of material. See what we mean when we say there is not much adjustment and its kinda flimsy.

Beat me too it. I think that first band is actually not the stock band for a 48RE (has the wrong connections?) but I could not find the actual band either. Either way, the 48RE stock band looks just like that. The big carbon fiber band after that is the one I went with. Good choice 6!

I guess I'll look at the adjustments next time I service it. 78k, serviced twice, Mag tech DD pan. Tow the 8k TT. Always works perfect. All stock.

Sorry guys, the top band is the 2nd gear band, bottom band is the low/reverse band. The kevlar/ high-po bands look the same with the exception on heavy duty mounting tabs and better friction material.

The first band is the stock style flex band but NOT the stock material. You can get the better material on the stock band, thats what I used. You can also get a rigid band in this width rather than the flex.

Better check again, the low reverse band is totally different than the intermediate in a 48RE. This is the upgrade 2 3/16 intermediate that most use instead of switching to the hemi band.

Thats the band I have in my transmission and it is the intermediate band (fact). The low/reverse band for the 48re is almost 3 pieces. Did you just handle 1,000s of the intermediate bands or the entire 48re?

Pot stirer!

I had to look twice to make sure I got the right picture. It would not be the first time a web site had the wrong picture.

PATC is great for visual stuff ain't it.

Whe adjusting the front band, does it matter whether the motor/tranny is warm or should it be done while cold? I've never done it before myself, but I know it's been done once before. Built tranny with 60K.
